Solid Editing tools

These are the tools inside the Solid Editing panel that can help you in
editing your 3D objects. These tools are union, subtract, intersect,
interfere, slice, thicken, extract edges, extrude face, and separate.

Activity no. 5

Follow this simple activity and answer the questions that follow to help you understand the functions of each Solid
Editing Commands.

SOLID UNION

1. Create two to three 3D solid placed beside each other leaving no spaces between them like
one in the picture.

2. Click the solid union command from the Solid Editing panel with this icon.

3. You will see a statement saying; “select objects” at the command window
asking you to select the objects you want to unite or combine. Click all the objects you created
(make sure there are no spaces between the objects.) then press enter.

Q1. What happened to the objects after executing the solid union command? Write your observations here.

SOLID SUBTRACT

1. Create two 3D solids.

2. Intersect one solid to the other like the one in the picture. The cylinder is placed inside the
box.

3. Click the solid subtract command from the solid editing panel with this icon.

4. You will see a “select objects” statement at the command window. You have to select the
object you want to subtract the other object from. In the example I would select the box first.
Then press enter.

5. You will notice the same statement after pressing enter. This time, select the other object you want to be subtracted. In
this case, I will be choosing the cylinder. Then press enter. You will notice a change by now on your 3D solid.

Q2. What happened to the objects after executing the solid subtract command?
Q2.

a. How will you compare the volume of the and shape of the hole to the subtracted object (ex. cylinder)?

b. to which objects can you apply the solid subtract command?

SOLID INTERSECT

1. Create two 3D solids again. Make sure they intersect or overlap each other. Like the one in
the picture.

2. Click the Solid Intersect command from the Solid Editing Panel with this icon.

3. You will be asked to “select objects” from the command window, so select the two 3D solids
you have created, then press enter.

Q3. What is the result of the solid intersect command?

a. How will you compare the newly created solid from the solids you created before using the solid intersect
command?

SLICE

1. Create 3D solid again.

2. Switch your view to any orthogonal view you like as long as the important
features of your solid can still be seen.

3. Click the slice command from the solid editing panel with this icon.

4. You will be asked to “select objects to slice” by the command window. This
means that you have to select the 3D solid or any solid you would want to be sliced.
Then press enter.

5. A prompt saying “specify start point of slicing plane” from the command window. Do not mind the other options. You
can discover that later on your own. This time, select first point of your slicing pattern. (Make sure you have switched to
any orthogonal view before doing this.) Try to think that you are literally slicing the object using a knife. Select any point
from the 3D solid.
6. This is what will happen after selecting the first point of
your slicing pattern. As if you were creating a line. And the
command window will ask you to “specify the second
point”. You have to select the point in which you want to
end the “slicing”. Click any point from the object to the
direction you want.

7. After doing so, the command window will show a

“specify a point on desired side” prompt. Again, don’t mind
the other options. This only means that you need to specify
the side of the object that you want to keep from slicing.
You just have to click a point from that side and the slicing
is done.

Q4. Describe what happened after specifying the point on the side you want to keep?

a. Which type of 3D solid can you use this command? Can you name one?

Q5. Give the function of the solid union based on your activity.

Q6. How about the solid subtract?

Q7. How about the solid intersect?

Q8. And the slice command?
