Climate

change
Karla Cristina Hernández Jiménez
WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
Periodic modification of Earth’s
climate brought about as a
result of changes in the
atmosphere as well as
interactions between the
atmosphere and various other
geologic, chemical, biological,
and geographic factors within
the Earth system.
WHAT IS
HAPPENING?

Effects that scientists had long predicted would result from

global climate change are now occurring, such as sea ice loss,
accelerated sea level rise, and longer, more intense heat waves.
CAUSES
Human activity
is the main cause of climate change because
people burn fossil fuels and convert land
from forests to agriculture.
Also people are burning fossil fuels, it
produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas
and Carbon dioxide is the main cause of
human-induced climate change. because it
stays in the atmosphere for a very long time.
NATURAL CAUSES
The Earth's climate can be affected by natural factors that are
external to the climate system, such as:
changes in volcanic activity
solar output
the Earth's orbit around the Sun
Volcanic eruptions are episodic and have relatively short-term effects
on climate. Changes in solar irradiance have contributed to climate
trends over the past century but since the Industrial Revolution, the
effect of additions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere has been
over 50 times that of changes in the Sun's output.
EFFECTS
Hotter temperatures: As greenhouse gas
concentrations rise, so does the global surface
temperature.
More severe storms: Destructive storms have become
more intense and more frequent in many regions.
Increased drought: Climate change is changing water
availability, making it scarcer in more regions.
A warming, rising ocean: The ocean soaks up most of
the heat from global warming.
Loss of species: Climate change poses risks to the
survival of species on land and in the ocean.
EFFECTS
Not enough food: Changes in the climate and increases
in extreme weather events are among the reasons behind
a global rise in hunger and poor nutrition.
More health risks: Climate change is the single biggest
health threat facing humanity
Poverty and displacement: Climate change increases the
factors that put and keep people in poverty.

Scientists predict global temperature increases from

human-made greenhouse gases will continue. Severe
weather damage will also increase and intensify.

INITIATIVES FOR ACTION

In executing its mission, NASA's sustainability
objectives are to:
increase energy efficiency;
increase the use of renewable energy;
measure, report, and reduce NASA's direct and
indirect greenhouse gas emissions;
conserve and protect water resources through
efficiency, reuse, and stormwater management;
eliminate waste, prevent pollution, and
increase recycling;
