She would never have sounded hesitant answering the question if she’d ever been asked about the toughest
moment in her career. Without a doubt, the Latin American trip had been the most traumatic Marta had ever
experienced. As a trained structural engineer, she was often sent to remote places after a natural disaster to
assess the damage and to suggest ways to prevent more injuries and death in the future. What she hadn’t
counted on was that, in this case, the disaster had only just begun.
The small mountain town was still mostly intact, but the earthquake had opened up cracks in the foundations
of many structures, which was a sure sign that the next quake could result in their collapse. To make matters
worse, the non-stop torrential rain was making her job more difficult and seemed to be causing further damage
to the foundations.
On her third day, during a meeting with her team in their ‘office’ – for reasons of safety, they had set up in
a tent outside the town – another earthquake struck. It only lasted a few seconds, but she could see the look of
relief on her team’s faces as the shaking stopped. Still, the thunderous roar that followed had them all staring
at one another in horror.
She knew in her heart what had happened, but the scene that spread out before her was beyond imagination.
The rain-saturated soil on the mountainside above the town had been shaken loose, and a gigantic mudslide
was carrying rocks and trees through the town. As she watched, she could see the torrent of mud begin to slow
down, but the damage had been done, and the town was now half-buried in mud that, in places, was so deep
that several multi-storey buildings had disappeared.
Although they had neither the training nor the equipment, she knew what had to be done. It could take days
for rescue crews to reach this remote location. ‘Put on your boots and grab your shovels!’ she called into the
tent. ‘We have to move – now!’
Hours later, after helping some of the survivors to a safer location, they found themselves standing near a small
building they had recently inspected. One side of it had collapsed, and mud was oozing in through the lower
windows. Suddenly, David, the one team member with search and rescue experience, held up his hand. ‘Quiet!’
he said.
They all heard the cries of a child. Unable to restrain herself despite the danger, Marta began climbing up the
collapsed wall. Looking down into the ruined building, she saw a young girl sitting on top of a refrigerator,
clutching a tiny dog. ‘We’re coming!’ she called, having no idea of how they were actually going to reach her.
