ENVIRONMENT AND POLLUTION
MAIN IDEA
Air Pollution
Main Idea : Pollutant are substances which are harmfull to the environment.
Carbon Monoxide
Main Idea : Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and poisonous gas.
Sulphur dioxide
Main Idea : Sulphur dioxide irritates the eyes and causes breathing difficulties.
Nitrogen Oxides
Main Idea : Nitrogen oxide is a serious pollutant which can damage people’s lungs.
Methane
Main Idea : Small amounts of methane are harmless to people but help trap heat from the
sun.

RE-TELL PARAGRAPH
Air Pollution
Pollutants are harmful substances that can cause harm to the environment, animals,
plants and humans. There are many pollutants in the air itself. Pollutants are formed due to
human activities. Most pollutants are invisible, but some can be seen, such as smoke.
Commonly known examples of important pollutants are carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide,
nitrogen oxides, and methane.
Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that can cause headaches, difficulty breathing, and
heart damage. This gas is colorless and odorless. Carbon monoxide mostly comes from
incomplete combustion of fuel in motorized vehicle engines, but some also comes from
nature, namely from forest fires.
Sulphur dioxide
Sulfur dioxide is an impurity that is mostly contained in coal, but is also present in
petroleum. Both of these fuels are used to generate electricity. It is estimated that 70% of
the sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere comes from electricity generation. Sulfur dioxide can
also cause eye irritation and difficulty breathing.
Nitrogen Oxides
Nitrogen oxide is a serious pollutant that can cause damage to the lungs. Many
nitrogen oxides are formed in car engines, power plants, and industry. But there are also
those that form naturally in thunderstorms and forest fires. Nitrogen oxides can also react
with other pollutants to produce other serious pollutants, an example of which is ozone.
Methane
Methane (CH4) is a colorless and odorless gas. The increase in methane along with
other gases in the atmosphere causes an increase in the temperature of the earth's surface or
we can call it global warming or the greenhouse effect. The increase in methane is due to
human activities such as agriculture. In addition, a lot of methane is used as fuel for natural
gas and some of it leaks from pipelines. But there is also methane that is naturally present
in the atmosphere, namely from bacterial decay in plants and other sources.
