Hey guys, my name is NTKH.

Today I will talk about how to distinguish three pairs of

vowels /i/ and /i:/, /e/ and /æ/, /əʊ/ and /aʊ/ and tips on distinguishing the three vowels in the
fastest way for English learners.
First, how to distinguish 3 pairs of vowels /i/ and /i:/, /e/ and /æ/, /əʊ/ and /aʊ/.
To distinguish two vowels in a pair of sounds, we need to distinguish the telltale signs
between those two pairs of sounds.
1. First, the sound /i/ and /i:/
When pronouncing the /i:/ sound :
+) A word with "ee", “ey”, "ea" , “ei”  is pronounced /i:/
Example: three /θri:/, sheep /ʃiːp/, key /kiː/ , tea /ti:/, seize /si:z/
When pronouncing the /ɪ/ sound :
+) A word with "a" is pronounced /ɪ/ in nouns that have 2 syllables and end in "age".
Example: shortage /’ʃɔːtɪdʒ/, village /’vɪlɪdʒ/,...
+) A word with "i" is pronounced /ɪ/ in a word with 1 syllable + ending with 1 or 2 consonants
+ the "i" sound in front of that consonant.
Example: ship /ʃɪp/, film /fɪlm,...
2.Second, the sounds  /e/ and /æ/
When pronouncing /e/
+) A word with “e” will be pronounced /e/, for some words containing 1 syllable that ends with
1 or more consonants.
For example: bed (n) – /bed/, member (n) – /’membə/
+) Some words containing the sound "ea" will be pronounced /e/
For example: ready (adj) – /’redi/, jealous (adj) – /’dʒeləs/
When pronouncing /æ/
+) For the letter "a" in a word with one syllable, ending with one or more consonants, or when
it is in a stressed syllable, we pronounce it as /æ/.
For example: fat (adj) – /fæt/, sad (adj) – /sæd/
                      candle (n) – /’kændl/, captain (n) – /’kæptɪn/
3.Third, the sounds  /əʊ/ and /aʊ/
When pronouncing the sound /aʊ/
+) A word with “ou” is pronounced as /aʊ/ in words that have the group “ou” with one or two
consonants
For example: around /əˈraʊnd/, sound /saʊnd/
+) A word with "ow" is pronounced /aʊ/
For example: power /paʊə(r)/, crown /kraʊn/
When pronouncing the sound /əʊ/
+) A word with "o" is pronounced /əʊ/ at the end of a word.
For example: go /gəʊ/, no /nəʊ/
+) A word with "oa" is pronounced /əʊ/ in a single-syllable word ending in one or two
consonants
For example: soap /səʊp/, load /ləʊd/
+) A word with "ou"  and “ow” is pronounced /əʊ/
For example: mold /məʊld/, tomorrow /təˈmɒrəʊ/

The second is about tips for distinguishing the above three vowel pairs.
- It is necessary to practice and create a habit of looking up how to read when learning new
words, especially words containing three pairs of vowels /i/ and /i:/; /e/ and /æ/; /əʊ/ and /aʊ/,
how to look up the pronunciation in dictionaries like Cambridge, Oxford, Urban,..., avoid
guessing because it will damage the pronunciation.
- In addition, you can also self-study pronunciation through mass media sites, access the
internet to online teaching sites such as Elsa speak, Duolingo, Cake, etc.
- In addition, being able to watch news, watch movies or listen to music in English will help
you improve your pronunciation and English skills.
