Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 General information

SattCon 05 Slimline is a series of compact process systems comprising a se-
lection of control, I/O and communication units which can be combined to
form different variants of the same basic system.
A basic SattCon 05 Slimline system consists of one control board and one I/O
unit. Five different control boards can be combined with four different I/O
units. The number of inputs an outputs handled can be increased by adding up
to 3 I/O units to a basic unit.
SattCon 05 Slimline communicates with other SattCon systems via
ABB Automation’s standard communication networks COMLI or SattBus.
The memories for all systems have battery back-up consequently all programs
and settings are retained if a power supply failure occurs.
SattCon 05 Slimline can handle both digital and analogue signals.
Accessories provided, in addition to I/O units, include digital and analogue test
panels, pulse and PT100 sensor interfaces, documentation programs etc.
SattCon 05 units are “Open type equipment” and must be mounted in suitable
cabinets. They can be used in environment class pollution degree 2 according
to IEC 1131-2 type 1 standard.

1.2 Associated units

quirements, see section 9.8 on page 128.
When the power supply is normal green LED PWR is lit.
If PWR is extinguished the power supply has failed. This may be due to a
faulty connection or perhaps the 2.5 AT microfuse F1 on CU05 is blown.
If PWR flashes the battery voltage is low and the battery must be changed.
The supply to the I/O units is via CU05 where it is protected by 1.25 AT mi-
crofuse F2 (+24 V) and 2.5 AT microfuse F1 (+5 V). The DX board is supplied
via F1 (+24 V and +5 V).

Backup battery
G1
A Type CR2032 (3.0V lithium battery) for memory backup.
Once the battery has been activated it has a minimum service life of 3 years. If
it is not used the battery can be stored for at least 5 years (at 25o C). The battery
can be changed while operations are in progress. If the supply is switched off
the battery must be changed within 15 seconds to avoid losing memory data.
When the battery voltage becomes too low LED PWR flashes and the memory
cell 1674 “Battery low” is set to 1.
The battery is activated by removing the battery tab on the control board.

The units which are connected to the VDU or PRINT serial channels must
have the following selections.
• 8 data bits and 1 stop bit.
• No parity
• Same transmission speed as the SattCon system (300-19200 baud).
The procedure for setting the type of terminal and transmission speed is de-
scribed in the manual “SattCon 05/OP (V4) VDU Programming”.
For a COMLI serial channel the following fixed settings are used:
• 8 data bits and1 stop bit.
Parity and the COMLI transmission speed (300-19200 baud) are selected as
described in the manual “SattCon 05/OP (V4) VDU Programming”.
Three communication interfaces can be used, RS-232C, RS-485 or RS-422.

Control boards CU05-25/45/65

RS-232C
RS-232C can be used for a VDU, a PC running DOX5, a printer or for COMLI
point to point communication. The RS-232C electrical interface uses ±12 V
DC. The maximum distance allowed for point-to-point communication de-
pends on the transmission speed. At 19200 baud the maximum recommended
distance is 15 m.
Hand shaking with the VDU can use either RTS-CTS or XON-XOFF. Hand
shaking with the printer uses CTS.

RS-485
RS-485 is used for COMLI multipoint communication or point-to-point over
distances above the RS-232C range. Up to 32 slave stations can be connected
to a COMLI master (CU05-45 and CU05-65).
RS-485 uses a differential signal between 0 and 5 V DC.
The serial channel is supplied by a separate 5 V DC that is generated internally.
The same pair of wires is used for transmitting and receiving (half duplex). In
RS-485 multipoint configuration up to 32 receiving stations can be driven. The
maximum transmission distance is 1200 m.
While the communication interface is strictly RS-485, units using RS-422 in-
terfaces can also be connected.

Note that signal earths (0VG) must always be connected together so that the
same level is obtained. 0VG is internally referenced to protective earth via a
0.01µF capacitor in parallel with a 22 MΩ resistor.
Other manufacturers may use a different polarity convention for RS-485 sig-
nals, requiring the signals TR- and TR+ to be shifted (pins 15 and 16).

A termination resistor (120Ω, 0.5W) must be included in the stations at each

end of the communication cable. This is achieved by linking pins 18 and 19 in
connector X2.

quirements, see section 9.8 on page 128.

The battery

When the system is started for the first time, the data transmission speed for
the VDU-channel is the default selection of 300 baud (applicable only if
DX232 or DX485G is fitted). To change this to 9600 baud by means of switch
S3, refer to Section 5.3 (Setting up and initial start). Information on selection
of the correct type of terminal and transmission speed for the VDU and PRINT
channels is given in the manual “SattCon 05/OP (V4) VDU Programming”.

5.3 Setting up and initial start

S1-S4 SattBus address and initialising switches

0 Normal mode (default selection).
F Changes the initial start up selection for the VDU transmission speed to
9600 baud (does not apply to the printer channel and only if DX232 or
DX485G is fitted).

Reset and initialise

When a unit is first started, a transmission speed of 300 baud is selected. To
change this to 9600 baud for the VDU proceed as follows:
1. Set S3 to position F.
2. Switch on the supply and wait 20 seconds.
3. Switch off the supply, set S3 to position 3 and switch the supply on again.
If switches S1, S2 and S3 are all in position F at start up a total reset is per-
formed and the transmission speed for the VDU is set to 9600 baud.
To communicate after battery replacement, or when the battery is first acti-
vated, the memory must be reset and initialised as described below. Transmis-
sion speed for the VDU channel, if used, is set to 9600 baud.
1. Set each of the three hexadecimal switches, S1-S3, to position F.
2. Switch on the supply.
3. Wait until the STOP indicator extinguishes then lights again.
4. Switch off the supply and repeat Steps 2 and 3.
5. Set switches S1 and S2 to the required SattBus address.
6. Set switch S3 to position 0.
7. Switch off the supply.
8. Switch on the supply (to read the SattBus address)
Selecting the correct type of terminal and transmission speed for the VDU and
PRINT channels is described in the manual “SattCon 05/OP (V4) VDU Pro-
gramming”.

S4
This button is used when the system crashes, e.g. due to an operator error such
as incorrect use of a backward jump in the PBS-program. If this occurs the
power supply must be switched off. The sequence implemented to force the
program to stop, is as follows:
• Press S4 while the power is switched on and keep it pressed for a further
15 seconds approximately.

6 I/O units

6.1 Connecting I/O units

Up to 3 I/O units can be connected to a basic unit (in the case of SD32D, all
output groups should have external power supply).
The lower X2 connector on the basic unit is used to connect to the upper X1
connector on the next I/O unit. Note that connection to the wrong connector
damages the unit.
An 0.1m ribbon cable is supplied with each I/O unit. The cable is provided to
connect the I/O unit to the basic unit and for connections between I/O units.
Three longer connection cables are available as options: IOCOP-0.3, IOCOP-
1.0 and IOCOP-2.0. The length of IOCOP-0.3 including the connector is 0.4m,
1.0 and 2.0 are 1.1m and 2.1m long respectively.
Selection of the number and positions of the IOCOP cables is at the discretion
of the installer but the total length of the cables must not exceed 2.7m.

493-0680-11 37
I/O units

Mounting IOCOP cables

A mounting kit comprising the following is supplied with each IOCOP cable:
• Mounting bracket 2
• Screws 4
• Locking washers 4

1. Screw the connector for the IOCOP cable securely to the mounting
bracket. It is to be noted that the slit in the contact should be turned up-
wards.
2. Fit the connector to the I/O unit.
3. Secure the mounting bracket using the screws and locking washers.
This mounting method ensures that the mounting bracket is positioned within
the allowed tolerance with respect to the connector on the I/O unit.
The IOCOP cable can then be removed and refitted without difficulty.

38 493-0680-11
I/O units

Points to observe for a satisfactory installation:

• SattCon 05 units are “Open type equipment” and must be mounted in suit-
able cabinets.
• The terminals must be marked with the symbol if voltages > 50 V are
connected.
• The basic unit and the I/O units ought to be installed in the same cabinet.
The cabinet should be made of steel or some other conducting material.
Mounting the basic unit outside a cabinet should be avoided.
• The lower connector, X2, on the I/O unit is connected to the next I/O unit’s
upper, X1, connector. Note that using the wrong connector damages the
unit.
• Connection of further I/O units is by means of the bus cable supplied with
the units (short ribbon cable) or an optional IOCOP-cable.
• The powersupply to the basic unit must be switched off when connecting or
disconnecting I/O units.
• If the above points are ignored, units may be damaged or the specified in-
terference tolerance may not be achieved.

The pulse input cannot be used if Sync input is used or if DX232 or DX485G
is fitted in the basic unit. Pulse inputs can only be handled by units equipped
with CU05-25 or CU05-45. Programming of Pulse and Sync inputs is de-
scribed in the manual “SattCon 05/OP (V4) VDU Programming”.

Outputs
The 28 transistor outputs are divided into two groups of eight (40-47, 50-57)
and 1 group of twelve outputs (60-67, 70-73). The outputs are designed for
voltages between 12-50V. Each output must be protected externally and allows
a maximum current of 0.8 A. The maximum current allowed for each group is
3.2 A which also must be protected externally. The total maximum current al-
lowed for all groups is 6.0 A. Since the three groups are separated from each
other, it is possible to use three different supply voltages in the same unit. Sev-
eral outputs can be connected to the same load if they are supplied from the
same power unit but if separate supplies are used a protective diode must be
connected in series with the output.
To conform to the specified interference tolerance the internal 0V rail is con-
nected to earth.

Digital and analogue I/O unit SDA

Inputs
Digital inputs
SDA has 16 opto-connected digital inputs distributed across two groups of
eight inputs each. The digital inputs can be powered internally with 24 V via

expansion bus terminals 18 and 20 or by an external 24 V supply. The input

filter at inputs 15, 16 and 17 can be disconnected.

Digital input stage in SDA

The upper group (D00-D07) is galvanically isolated but can be connected to

earth externally via the terminal block. The lower group (D10-D17) is con-
nected to system earth by link (XJ4) on the board. This link can be removed if
the lower group needs to be isolated. Galvanic separation requires an external
supply for the inputs.
0 volt is internally referred to earth via a filter comprising a 0.01 µF capacitor
in parallel with a 20 MΩ resistor. If the digital inputs are to be referred direct
to earth, terminals 19 and 29 are connected to the mounting panel (earth). (In
units with an article number ending with -01 the internal filter to earth are
missing).
The status of each input is indicated by an LED and the octal address for the
input is shown next to the LED.

Pulse input
If SDA constitutes the basic unit, addresses D115-117 can be used as pulse in-
puts to counter 00. The links to the input filter XJ5, XJ6 and XJ7 must be dis-
connected (turned 90°), and the link XJ12 on the control unit must be moved
from across terminals 1 - 2 to across terminals 2 - 3. SDA can handle pulses
up to a frequency of 2 kHz.

Pulse interface IP05 enables signals up to 4kHz from incremental sensors to

be handled. For instructions on the use of IP05 refer to section 8.3 on page
102.

Analogue inputs
SDA has 4 analogue inputs which can be used independently as current inputs
(0-20mA or 4-20mA) or voltage inputs (0-5V, 1- 5V or 0-10V). The inputs
have a common signal earth (single ended) and are connected to plug-in screw
terminals.

Note: If the connection to an analogue input linked for 0 to 10 V is broken, the

capacitor in the input filter slowly charges. Due to this the input signal rises
slowly to 100% when the input is not connected. Inputs which are not used
should be linked for 0-20 mA.

Data format for analogue inputs

An analogue input signal is converted to a 10-bit binary signal. Since SattCon
05 Slimline works with 16-bit words the input signal is placed in the 10 most
significant bits and the remaining bits are set to 0. This means that an analogue
signal is represented by and integer in the range 0 to 65472.

Data format for analogue inputs

SattCon 05 reads the 16-bit word as a decimal integer between 0 and 65535
but can also present the signal as a percentage value (as a percentage of full
scale deflection). Because bits 0-5 are zero, the digital representation of the
analogue signal is limited to 65472.

Digital outputs
The sixteen digital outputs are divided into two groups of eight outputs. Each

allows a maximum current of 0.8 A. The maximum current allowed for each
group is 3.2 A which also must be protected externally. The total maximum
current allowed for all groups is 5.0 A.

SattCon05 Slimline always operates with 16 bit words and since the analogue
outputs have a resolution of 8 bits, a conversion is first carried out from 16 to
8 bits before the analogue output signal is applied to the process. Only the most
significant bits of the value are used in this case. This means that an analogue
output signal is represented by a decimal integer in the range 0 to 65280.

Power supply
The digital part of SDA is supplied internally via the expansion bus (+5 V via
F1 and +24 V via F2 on CU05). The LED “PWR” alongside the terminal block
for the inputs indicates the +5 V supply voltage.
The analogue part (analogue inputs and outputs) uses an external 24 V supply
fed via terminals 30 and 31. The supply is distributed via two fuses and two
LEDs alongside the terminal block for the outputs provide supply indications.
The same supply can also be used for the analogue sensors (terminals 00 and
05) or, for example, for analogue test panel ATC05.
The digital outputs for the unit are supplied from an external source (12-50V)
and the digital inputs are supplied either from the internal 24V via the expan-
sion bus or from an external 24 V supply.

signal is represented by an integer in the range 0 to 65472.

SattCon 05 reads the 16-bit word as a decimal integer between 0 and 65535
but can also present the signal as a percentage value (as a percentage of full
scale deflection). Because bits 0-5 are zero, the digital representation of the
analogue signal is limited to 65472.

For analogue signal connections, cable requirements specified as Group II in
the installation instructions apply. This means that:
1. Shielded cable must be used.

2. The cables for digital and analogue signals must be mounted on different
cable supports.
3. The analogue cables must be as far as possible from interference sources.
External transmitters can be supplied with +24 V DC via terminals 00, 05, 10,
15, 20 and 25. This voltage has a separate fuse F1 (0.5 AT, 5 × 20 mm) and a
separate LED indicator +24V AI. The terminals can be connected/discon-
nected to the power supply by means of the jumpers S1 - S6:

Terminal No. 0 5 10 15 20 25

The power supply is connected if the jumper is linked 1 - 2, and it is discon-

nected if the linking is 2 - 3. Refer to page 60 regarding the location of
jumpers.

Data format for analogue outputs

SattCon 05 always operates with 16-bit words and since the analogue outputs
have a resolution of 8 bits, a conversion is first carried out from 16 to 8 bits
before the analogue output signal is applied to the process. Only the most sig-
nificant bits of the value are used in this case. This means that an analogue
output signal is represented by a decimal integer in the range 0 to 65280.

SattCon 05 reads the 16-bit word as a decimal integer between 0 and 65535
but can also present the signal as a percentage value (as a percentage of full

analogue signal is limited to 65280.

external supply.
0 volt is internally referred to earth via a filter comprising a 0.01 µF capacitor
in parallel with a 20 MΩ resistor. If the digital inputs are to be referred direct
to earth, terminals 9, 19 and 29 are connected to the mounting panel. (The filter

Outputs
The 24 outputs are opto-connected and divided into three groups of eight. The
outputs are supplied with power from an external power source between 12
and 50V. Each output is protected externally and allows a maximum current of
0.8 A. The maximum current allowed for each group is 3.2 A which also must
be protected externally. The total maximum current allowed for all groups is
5.0 A.

7.2 Communication board DX485G

Function
DX485G is a circuit board which can be connected to a SattCon 05 Slimline
basic unit to provide two galvanic isolated RS-485 serial channels. Connection
to the channels is by means DXDSUB-SL, a box with two D-sub connectors,
which is connected the 34-pole X2 connector on DX485G via a ribbon cable.

RS-485 is used for COMLI multipoint communication or point-to-point com-

munication for distances above the RS-232C range. Up 32 slave stations can
be connected to a COMLI master (CU05-45 and CU05-65).
RS-485 uses a differential signal between 0 and 5 V DC.
RS-485G can be configured for 4-wire or 2-wire communication.

493-0680-11 87
Communication boards DX232 and DX485G

The serial channel is supplied by a separate isolated 5 V DC that is generated

internally. RS-485 can communicate with up to 32 receivers. The maximum
transmission distance is 1200 m.
While the communication interface is strictly RS-485, units using RS-422 in-
terfaces can also be connected.
Note that signal earths (0VG) must always be connected together so that the
same level is obtained. 0VG is internally referenced to protective earth via a
0.01µF capacitor in parallel with 22 MΩ resistor.

8.1 Digital test panel, PTC05

Digital test panel PTC05 is used to simulate up to eight digital inputs. The
panel is connected to the inputs of the I/O unit for SattCon 05 Slimline.

Function
PTC05 has 8 switches which apply “1” (+24 V) and “0” (O V) to the corre-
sponding inputs when the switches are in the ON and OFF positions respec-
tively.

Power supply
PTC05 uses a +24 V DC supply which is fed from the I/O unit by connecting
the PTC05 cable to the 24 V and 0 V supply terminals. The connections vary
depending on the type of I/O unit but they are usually the lowest pair in each
group of inputs.

Connection
PTC05 is connected as follows:
• Prise out the plug-in screw terminal at the inputs to be simulated using a
screwdriver.
• Plug in PTC05.
• Connect the supply cables as shown in the appropriate illustration (see fol-
lowing pages) for the type of I/O unit to which PTC05 is being connected.

8.2 Analogue test panel ATC05

An analogue test panel, ATC05, can be connected to the inputs on the SDA or
the SACV. ATC05 can simulate four analogue input signals, 0-10V.

Function
ATC05 has four potentiometers each of which produce an analogue input sig-
nal for SDA and SACV. At potentiometer position 0 a 0 V output (0% of full
scale deflection) is produced and at MAX 10 V (100%) is produced. Between
these settings a smooth (stepless) transition from 0 to 10 occurs. Note the in-
puts on the I/O unit must be strapped for 0-10 V (see section SDA or SACV).
The potentiometer on the side of the test unit affects all four signals and is used
to calibrate the MAX voltage.

8.3 Pulse interface, IP05

Function
IP05 is a pulse interface which converts signals from an incremental position
sensor to a form suitable for application to pulse inputs on I/O units SD32D
and SDA. An incremental position sensor produces pulses that can be counted
and can be used to determine the position and direction of movement of the
sensor.
SattCon 05 must be correctly programmed so that IP05 can be used to count
pulses. In addition the filter at the pulse inputs to SD32D or SDA must be dis-
connected. The input pulses are then counted and the resultant count is stored
in a counter reserved for this purpose CNT 0. See also the description of the
pulse input in the manual “SattCon 05/OP (V4), VDU Programming”.
IP05 can multiply the pulses by 2, divide them by 2 or leave them unchanged.
IP05 can be used only in basic units fitted with CU05-25 or CU05-45. The
pulse input cannot be used if the synchronising input is used or if DX232 or
DX485G is fitted in SattCon 05 Slimline.

Position sensor
Incremental position sensors connected to IP05 should generate 2 square wave
pulse trains 90° out of phase. This enables the number of pulses to be counted
and the direction of movement of the sensor to be determined. Pulse trains can
include normal and inverse versions (complementary) or normal versions only
(simple). In addition reset and Zero Enable pulses can also be handled.

Complementary signals

102 493-0680-11

Simple signals

A simple signal can be active high, e.g. 0 V = 0, +24 V =1 or active low e.g. 0
V = 1, +24 V = 0. IP05 is adjusted for the different signal types by means of
links, see page 107.

Active high Active low

Logic levels

Reset and Zero Enable

A reset occurs when the reset signal is ACTIVE provided the Zero Enable
signal is also ACTIVE.
Zero Enable can be used to inhibit resetting of the counter in SattCon 05 even
though reset pulses are being applied from the position sensor. This may be
necessary, for example, if the sensor is being used to indicate the position of a
conveyor. The sensor can be mounted at the end of the conveyor and carry out
a reset only at a particular conveyor position, ignoring reset signals obtained
as the sensor rotates backwards and forwards as the conveyor moves.

493-0680-11 103
Accessories

Pulse counting
Changes in the level of the pulse signal applied to channel 1 are used to pro-
duce counter pulses. Depending on links fitted in IP05, the counter pulses can
be the same frequency as the sensor pulses, 2 times the sensor frequency or the
sensor frequency divided by 2.

IP05 connections

IP05 is connected to the last 8 inputs on SD32D and uses addresses 135-137.
When connecting to SDA addresses 115-117 are used. The five inputs that are
not used for pulses (130-134, 110-114), are available for normal use at the ter-
minal block for IP05 (labelled 10-14). IP05 is connected to the input terminals
using a cable supplied with the unit.
The are three differential inputs for the pulse sensor in the lower terminal block
of IP05, Channel 1 and 2 together with a reset input labelled 0. If a ZERO EN-
ABLE signal is used it is connected to terminal 00. The terminals which are
used depends on the links fitted in IP05, see “IP05 links” in the following sec-
tion.

To enable inputs 135-137 on SD32D or 115-117 on SDA to be used as pulse
inputs, links to input filters XJ1, XJ2 and XJ3 (SD32D) or XJ5, XJ6 and
XJ7(SDA) must be removed. This can be achieved by moving the links side-
ways on SD32D (or turning them 90° on SDA). See also Chapter 6, Sections

Pulse inputs and ZERO ENABLE can be linked for 3 signal types:
1. Complementary signals.
2. Non-complementary (single logic) signals, active high (12-24V).
3. Non-complementary (single logic) signals, active low (0V).

In addition different resolutions can be selected by means of links:

1. Pulse counter incremented by one for each sensor pulse (x 1).
E.g. 300 pulses from the sensor produces 300 pulses to the basic unit.
2. Pulse counter incremented by two for each sensor pulse (x 2).
E.g. 300 pulses from the sensor produces 600 pulses to the basic unit.
3. Pulse counter incremented by one for each alternate sensor pulse (÷ 2).
E.g. 300 pulses from the sensor produces 150 pulses to the basic unit.

rity copies to be obtained from SattCon 05/OP version 4. It contains a 128
kbytes Flash PROM (electrically reprogrammable memory) and backs up the
whole register area R0-R27999. Operating instructions for the unit are given
in the manuals “SattCon 05/OP (V4) VDU Programming” and
“SattCon 05-65/OP65 (V4) VDU Programming”. The new SBUP05 has a
label such as this on the lid:

SBUP05.

The old 32-kbyte version of SBUP05 can be used to transfer programs be-
tween SattCon 05 versions 4 and 3.x, provided all instructions used in the
source system are also supported by the target system. It is also up to the user
to make sure that the memory capacity is sufficient in the receiving SattCon 05
or SBUP05 unit. If in doubt, check by means of a VDU that the end of the PLC
program or the BASIC program has been transferred.

Unconditional start to execute

If, when transferring a program, the LOAD key is kept pressed until the
VERIFY indicator has gone out, the program execution starts unconditionally
if the verification is correct. This function can be used to transfer a program
and start it in a SattCon 05 which does not have a terminal connected.

AUTOLOAD function
LOAD is started automatically from SBUP05 if its POWER switch is in the
“I” position when the connected SattCon 05 is switched on. When the verifi-
cation is approved, the program execution starts even if the system was in the
STOP mode when the power was switched off.

Register restore
SattCon 05 version 4 can work in two modes with SBUP05.
• Normal LOAD: Register values, timer preset values, counter preset values
and all other parameter settings are transferred with the program during
LOAD and verified during VERIFY.
• Selective LOAD: Register values, timer preset values and counter preset
values are not transferred with the program during LOAD and are not ver-
ified.
SattCon 05 is delivered with normal LOAD as default but is changed to selec-
tive LOAD in the following way:
• Switch off the power to SattCon 05, connect SBUP05 and set its POWER
switch to position “I”.
• Press the LOAD pushbutton, switch on the power to the SattCon 05 and
keep the pushbutton pressed until the LED indications LOAD and VERIFY
are lit.
When the pushbutton is released, SattCon 05 performs a selective LOAD and
maintains this mode, i.e. all subsequent LOAD operations will be selective un-
til the mode is changed back to normal. When a SBUP05 is connected to a
SattCon 05, the selective mode is indicated by the LOAD and VERIFY indi-
cations flashing instead of being out as in the normal mode.
To set SattCon 05 back to the mode with normal LOAD, proceed as described
above but press the VERIFY pushbutton instead of the LOAD pushbutton.
When the pushbutton is released, a normal LOAD is performed. A total reset
of SattCon 05 also changes it back to normal mode. Note that the mode infor-
mation is stored in SattCon 05, not in SBUP05.

Fitting the Flash PROM

The Flash PROM in SBUP05 is fitted in a socket which allows easy removal.
Take care to eliminate the risk of ESD by touching something at earth potential
to discharge any body static.
Proceed as follows:
1. Remove the cover (1 screw).
2. Release the memory by pulling the orange clasp upwards.
3. Change the Flash PROM.

9.1 General rules

Tightening torque: 0.5-0.8 Nm.
Use copper wires only, which are UL approved for 60/75 °C.
Cable areas: 0.5-2.5 mm2, AWG 20 - AWG 12
Pollution degree: 2 according to IEC 1131-2 type 1 standard.

9.2 Selection and installation of cables

Separation of cables into groups

As a first step to avoiding distortion of signals to and from the control system
due to interference, the cables should be grouped according to the sensitivity
of the signals they carry.

Suitable divisions for signal types

Group I Fast signals with voltage levels 0 ±10 V. Exam-

ples are terminal cables to printers and VDUs.
Very sensitive to interference. Should be well
shielded.

Group II Medium-fast signals with voltage levels 0-50 V.

Examples are signals from angular transducers,
electronic pulse transducers without relay out-
puts. Sensitive to strong interference.

Group III Slow signals with voltage levels 0 - 220 V. Exam-

ples are mains supply connections, signals from
relays, connectors and lights. Not normally sen-
sitive to interference but can generate considera-
ble interference.

Recommended cables for signal types

The following cables should be used for the groups of signals defined above
depending on the types of interference source in the vicinity.

The following minimum distances should be provided between cables gener-
ating interference and those sensitive to interference:

signal
Group II 0.1m 0.3m 0.3m 1.0m

Group III - - 0.1m 0.3m

Recommended minimum distances between cables to avoid interference

The principal rule is to keep cables that carry different types of signal as far
apart as possible. Do not mix different signals in the same cable and make sure
that different groups of cables run parallel over the shortest distance possible.
Never route signal cables on the same cable supports as high voltage cables.
When passing through walls, it may be difficult to separate different groups but
you should at least separate the cables immediately before and after the wall.
Similar signals should always be grouped together. A transducer's supply and
return conductors should always be within the same cable. In addition, all ca-
bles should lie as close as possible to an earth connection.
If any signal is more sensitive than the others, it should be separated even if
they are the same signal type. The most sensitive cables should always lie clos-
est to the earth connection.

118 493-0680-11
General installation guidance

Shielding
All signal cables of group I and II should be shielded. The shield is connected
the shortest way to the earth bar in one end.The earth bar should be installed
as close to SattCon 05 Slimline as possible. The shield ought to be referred to
earth in the external equipment (transducers, connection boxes etc.). This can
be done with at capacitor between shield and earth. The capacitor can have a
value between 1 - 10 nF and min. 2 kV. If there is no risk for earth currents
however, the shield can be connected directly to earth.
Unused conductors should be cut away. They must not lie loose outside the
shield.
NOTE: Communication cables for SattBus must NOT be shielded.
Do not use aluminium-sheathed 230 V cable for signals in groups I or II. This
type of cable has a split along the whole of its length which makes it sensitive
to interference.
Group I and II cables which pass through a strong magnetic field can be shield-
ed by running the cable through steel conduit which is earthed.
All cables connected SattCon 05 Slimline’s various D-sub connectors must be
fitted with metalised covers which in turn must be connected to the cable
shield in the following manner.
The shield is folded back over the cables outer insulation. The cable clamp on
the connector cover is then mounted over the folded back shield to clamp it
tight and ensure a good connection. Note that normally only one end of a
shield is connected to earth to avoid earth currents.

Communication cable connection

Examples of the connections for a communication signal cable are shown
below. Since twisted pair cable is often used, the leads which are twisted are
indicated. The shields connection with earth shows what is sufficient for RS-
232C at low-freqency interference. With RS-485 the sufficient connection to
earth at high-freqency interferece is shown. Note thatthe method for con-
necting the shields to earth can differ between systems because of different in-
terference environments.

9.3 Interference protection

Examples of sources of interference are relays, contactors, solenoids, thyristor
equipment, earth faults, static discharge etc.
During the installation planning stage ensure that equipment locations and ca-
ble runs are selected for optimum protection from these sources.
Locate contactors, solenoids, magnet stabilizers and similar equipment in a
separate cubicle or at least separated from the system by an earthed partition.
Heavy current fuses should be located at least 30 cm from a system.
Fit interference suppressors for large inductive loads such as solenoid valves:

9.4 Cabinet mounting

The products are “Open type equipment” (except SattCon OP) and must be
built into a metal cabinet (NEMA type 12, IP44 or better).
The following guidance and advice should be followed when installing
SattCon 05 Slimline in a cabinet.
1. Where possible, the cabinet should be installed in the immediate vicinity
of the machine that is being controlled (short cable runs).
2. Mount SattCon 05 Slimline on one metal mounting plate or on the cabi-
net door.
3. Layout the equipment in the cabinet so that it is not too cramped. This re-
duces the risk of electrical interference.
4. Consider the need for ventilation. The temperature may become exces-
sive on a hot summer's day or during the night when air conditioning is
reduced. Remember that the top of the cabinet is the hottest part.

Cable supports
Cables are laid in some form
of support, horizontally to the
vertical cable duct, which
must be at least 50 mm away
from SattCon 05. The cable
duct should be fitted direct to
the mounting plate. If re- SattCon 05

9.5 Protective earthing

All units must be connected to the installation's common earth using a suffi-
ciently thick cable (10mm2) which travels the shortest route to the earthing
point. This reduces the risk of uncontrolled earth currents producing interfer-
ence that is difficult to locate.
The following illustration shows important earthing points inside and outside
the cabinet.

Earth points inside and outside the cabinet

1. The earth stud is the main earth connection point for all earth cables in
the cubicle.
2. SattCon 05 Slimline is earthed to the panel in which it is mounted. If the
panel is mechanically separated from the hinged frame ensure there is a
good electrical connection between the panel and the frame.
3. Run a cable (≥ 6mm2) from the door to the central earth stud.
4. Run a cable (≥ 6mm2) from the hinged frame to the central earth stud.
5. Run a cable (≥ 6mm2) from the mounting plate to the earth stud.
6. Connect the earth rail via a wire (≥ 6mm2) to the earth stud.

493-0680-11 125

7. The shield on shielded cables is connected to the earth bar. The shield
should also be connected to earth in external equipment, preferably via
1 - 10 nF (e.g. use Phoenix TT-SLKK5-C12n230AC) capacitor but direct
if there is no risk of earth currents.
8. The cabinets earth should be connected to the common earth for the in-
stallation via good size cable (≥ 10mm2).

9.6 Power supply

The 24 V power supply unit for SattCon 05 Slimline should be fitted in the
same cabinet as the control unit. The 0V line of the 24 V supply is connected
to earth via a cable of at least 2.5 mm2.
External equipment such as transducers, relays, connectors, lamps etc. should
be supplied from an external power source. An external supply is also pre-
ferred for the input signals. The inputs can also be supplied by the 24 V DC
that is used for SattCon 05 Slimline provided the load current does not exceed
0.5 A per I/O unit. This supply is accessible at the two terminals on the bottom
left of an I/O unit.
The power source for the inputs must supply a stabilized voltage so that the
system can clearly distinguish between the “signal” and “no-signal” condi-
tions. A power supply unit with a high power rating is not required since the
inputs do not normally consume more than 10 mA (24 V DC).
The current loads on the outputs can be much higher however but the voltage
need not be so stable; the voltage can vary significantly without the function
of lamps and relays being affected. Thus a simple rectifier power supply is usu-
ally quite satisfactory for supplying the outputs (12-50V DC).

9.7 Electromagnetic compatibility

The SattCon05 system has been approved to conform with the EMC directive
89/336/EEC if installed as described below.
• Communication cable to DX485G must be connected via an external pro-
tection device. Recommended device is Phoenix Modutrab MT RS485.
This have to be mounted as close as possible to the connector of DX485G
and with the ground connection as short as possible. Connect the protection
device terminals marked "OUT" to the DX485G.
• Incoming cables for power supply to the basic unit must be provided with a
mains filter at the inlet to the panel where the SattCon 05 is mounted. A suit-
able type is Schaffner FN 660-3/06 or other 2-stage chassis mount filter.

Enclosure

Alternatively:

24 V DC Filter SattCon 05

• Cables for analogue current outputs (e.g. 0-20 mA) must be of type shielded
twisted pair. The shield is connected direct to to the mounting plate. After
the earthing point the cable may be run inside the enclosure with the shield
peeled off.
• In addition to the general shielding instructions for D-type connectors on
page 119, a communication cable connected direct to the X2 contact of
SattCon 05 Slimline must be prepared as follows. No longer than 70 mm
from the D-type connector the outer insulation of the cable is to be removed,
to allow the shield to be clamped direct to the mounting plate. Note that this
is not necessary for cables connected to communication boards or to
SattCon OP.
• The equipment should not be installed close to powerful high frequency
sources. If this cannot be avoided, possible problems can be solved by ex-
ternal filters.
• The enclosure doors should be closed when the system is in operation.
• Discharge your static electricity by touching grounded metal parts before
working with units inside the enclosure.

9.8 CE Low-Voltage Directive (LVD)

Note! In order to comply with the CE Low-Voltage Directive, you must use a
Safety Extra-Low-Voltage (SELV) or a Protected Extra-Low-Voltage (PELV)
power supply to provide DC power to SattCon 05.

128 493-0680-11

10.2 Battery replacement

To prevent loss of data, a backup battery maintains the supply to the CMOS
memory in CU05 if the power supply fails.

When the battery voltage drops below the permitted minimum level
the following indications occur:
1. The PWR LED flashes.
2. Memory cell 1674 (BATTERY LOW) is set to 1.
3. When the mains power is restored the error message “B” is displayed on
the terminal connected to the VDU channel.
4. If the “STOP” LED lights and a “P” is displayed on the VDU, the battery
voltage has dropped so low during a mains failure that the program in
memory has become corrupted. The program must be reloaded.

493-0680-11 131
Maintenance

Proceed as follows to replace the battery:

1. Ensure that a backup copy of the program is available.
2. Remove the basic unit’s cover.
3. Switching off of the power supply is preferred but not essential. With no
supply applied (i.e. the battery actually removed) the new battery must be
fitted within 15 seconds to avoid loss of memory data.
4. Gain access to the CU05 board.
5. Gently remove the old battery using a small screw driver.
6. Carefully ease up the retaining strip/connector with a small screw driver
and place the new battery in the holder with the +ve side upwards.
The battery type is CR2032 or equivalent 3V, 0.18 Ah.
7. Remount the CUO5 board and refit the cover.
8. Switch on the supply if it has been removed.

10.4 Spare parts

Due to the extremely high quality standards achieved using current production
methods and the high reliability of modern electronic components no recom-
mended spares are supplied for SattCon 05 Slimline or the associated units.
It is suggested however that a suitable quantity of spare microfuses, of the
same types as those supplied with the units, are held for each installation since
these items are not as yet common in a factory environment. A complete list
of the fuses used is given in Section 10.1.
Other components the user may wish to hold as spares can be chosen for the
list in Chapter 11, “Main components and accessories”.
Note that the backup battery is a consumable item which must be stored cor-
rectly and MUST NOT be stored for a period longer than that recommended.
