Reflection Topic: Critical Thinking and Peer Assessment

Answer 1:

Critical thinking is a process where a person thinks analytically and comes to a justifiable conclusion
(University of the People, 2020). Critical thinking is an important skill to develop as it is useful in every phase
of life.

Critical thinking promotes curiosity in students (University of the People, 2020). Curiosity during peer
assessment is essential as that will encourage students to engage in a healthy discussion. Students learn to
analyze their peers’ work critically and this will in turn make the students ask questions while giving feedback.

Different students perceive the same information differently. During peer assessments, students must decide
how to write their feedbacks so that their peer can take these feedbacks constructively (Barack, 2020). While
assessing peers, it is very important to give substantial feedbacks. At the same time, it is important to make
sure that the peers take their feedbacks constructively and positively. This clearly shows that students learn
to think critically in order to give a feedback which makes sense and at the same time does not hurt the
feelings of peers.

Critical thinking helps make independent decisions (University of the People, 2020). During peer assessment,
the student is encouraged to assess their peers on their own. This helps the student to think critically which in
turn helps them in having and expressing their own opinions.

Students show their critical thinking abilities while assessing their peers (University of Waterloo, 2019).
When a student gives a justifiable opinion in their feedback, or asks questions, or even adds information to
the initial assignment, it means that the student has analyzed their peers’ assignments critically. It shows
that the student has developed a good critical thinking ability.

This week was all about critical thinking. When I assess my peers, I will try to make sure that the grading
rubric has been followed, appropriate citations have been made, good netiquette is followed, and at the
same time, I will try to ensure that I have assessed my peers critically by adding my perspectives about the
given topic and justifying my opinions. I will also try to ask relevant questions wherever I have doubts.
