Local government is a governmental institution that has jurisdiction over a subnational

territorially defined area, also known as a substate territorially specified area in federal
systems. Local government jurisdiction stems from the fact that it is elected, a factor that
allows for significant variation in its behaviour both among countries. A public organisation
authorised to determine and manage a constrained range of public policies within a compact
area that is a subset of a regional or national government is also known as local
government. It is at the bottom of a governmental pyramid that includes the central
government at the top. Local government is a third level of government that is much better
connected and has an impact on their daily lives. Not only that, but local government allows
a greater number of people to take part in governance while covering a much smaller area.
Furthermore, local government brings a sense of togetherness to a political system.

Local government in Malaysia is a political subdivision of a nation or state that is established

by law and has significant authority to local affairs, including the ability to levy taxes and
compel (hire) workers for specified purposes. Malaysia's local government is the lowest tier
of government, controlled by the states and federal territories, which are in turn assessed by
the federal tier. Local governments, with the exception of local governments in federal
territories, are usually under the exclusive jurisdiction of state governments, as stipulated in
the Malaysian Constitution. The federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government is
accountable for managing and instituting local government practises throughout the country.
There are several exclusions in the form of "special and modified local authorities," which
are led by a public servant with the title President (Yang Di-Pertua) for rural areas and
municipalities and Mayor (Datuk Bandar) for cities. The state governments appoint the
councils.
