Salary Scale - £36,472 - £57,349 per annum (pro rata if part time)
Looking for a new and exciting challenge? Then think about working in NHS Forth Valley
in the heart of Scotland.
Applications are invited from trainee doctors having recently completed or about to finish
either UK Foundation Programmes or Internal Medical Training to apply for the position
of Clinical Development Fellow (CDF) in Haematology.
These exciting posts offer 12 months working in the Haematology Department at Forth
Valley Royal Hospital. In addition, CDFs will have protected 6 hours per week of
development time and 2 hours of in-house training. The clinical component will comprise
inpatient assessment, haemato-oncology treatment clinics, general haematology clinics
and liaison haematology. There will also be an introduction to laboratory haematology.
There may be an opportunity to gain additional experience in another speciality of
choice on negotiation with base team and destination team.
The appointment will be on a full-time, fixed term basis and remuneration will be
determined by the pay and conditions of hospital medical and dental staff (NHS Circular:
PCS (DD) 2022/02).
The successful applicant will be part of the Haematology team. The department
currently includes 6 consultant haematologists: Dr Roddy Neilson, Dr Rachel Boulton-
Jones, Dr Katrina Farrell, Dr Hugh Edwards, Dr Katharine Hanlon and Dr Robbie McNeil
in addition to a haematology registrar, 2 Haematology CNSs and 2 Haematology ANPs.
Dr Emma Stewart and Dr Katy Parsons start as consultants in Autumn 2023.
Potential projects for a successful applicant within the department could include quality
improvement projects on outpatient clinic structures or audits on chemotherapy
governance compliance. There would be opportunity to get involved in undergraduate

and post-graduate haematology teaching as well as the department is due to start an
Undergraduate SSC module in Haematology for University of Glasgow students.

Introduction to NHS Forth Valley
NHS Forth Valley is one of 14 regional health boards in Scotland and serves a
population of nearly 310,000 in a diverse geographical area which covers the heart of
Scotland and covers three council areas, Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Falkirk.
NHS Forth Valley has an annual budget of approximately £570 million and is the
largest employer in the area, with approximately 8000 staff from a wide range of
professional and support occupations. Acute Services are based in our modern,
purpose built 860 bedded, Forth Valley Royal Hospital, which opened in 2011 and
provides inpatient and outpatient services. It is supported by a network of four
community hospitals, 56 health centres, day centres providing care and support for
patients with mental illness and learning disabilities and a wide range of community
based services.
We are home to the Scottish Centre for Clinical Simulation and Human Factors, one of
the most advanced training facilities of its kind where medical staff are able to hone their
skills using computerised mannequins. In addition, NHS Forth Valley has been named in
a survey of trainee doctors as one of the top places to be in the UK for medical
education and training.
There are two Health and Social Care Partnerships (HSCP) which cover the Forth
Valley area – one for Clackmannanshire and Stirling and one for Falkirk.

The Forth Valley Area
Forth Valley, in the heart of Scotland, is an exciting place to live and work.
Transport links are second to none with excellent motorway and rail links and
two international airports nearby, Edinburgh and Glasgow. House hunters in
the Forth Valley area are spoiled for choice. On offer are a large array of
established and new properties in a variety of attractive settings.
Education in the area is first class, with excellent provision of pre-school,
primary and secondary education. State schools in the area have strong reputations
and there is also easy access to the area’s private schools in Dollar and Crieff. On the
further education front, Stirling boasts an excellent University and access to the
University cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh is easy. There are also further education
Colleges in Falkirk, Stirling and Alloa.
Stirling Area
A wee city with a big history, Stirling punches well above its weight for historic
attractions and spectacular scenery, not to mention shopping, places to eat and exciting

esplanade towards the National Wallace Monument on the edge of the rolling Ochil Hills
before looking north east for the mountain peaks of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs

Falkirk Area
The Falkirk area is steeped in history with a wealth of attractions, including two of the
world’s most unique, including, The Falkirk Wheel and The Kelpies in The Helix Park.
Plus the Falkirk area has a significant section of the John Muir Way. Falkirk is a historic
town centre with a traditional high street and lots of things to be doing with two large

Clackmannanshire Area
Clackmannanshire lies between the majestic Ochil Hills and the River Forth and provides the perfect year-

1. JOB DETAILS
2. JOB PURPOSE
Working with Clinical Directors, Clinical Service Leads and the Directorate
Management teams for NHS Forth Valley, the post will give successful applicants
the opportunity to experience Haematology before committing to IMT or indeed
Higher Specialty Training in Haematology. It will help the applicants to gain
further specialty experience and quality improvement work experience to
strengthen their portfolios. The post will offer successful applicants the
opportunity to develop their clinical and professional competence in a purposeful
and supervised manner as an assist to overall CV development. It is envisaged
that the job will help implement the themes of Realising Realistic Medicine.
This post is aimed at CMT / FY2+ level i.e. those doctors having completed the
UK Foundation programme and having been assessed as "acute take safe" under

supervision, looking for some experience of acute care specialties in which they
may have a longer term interest, or to provide a professional development adjunct
to any future clinical activity if interested in another non-acute specialty longer
term.

4. DIMENSIONS
NHS Forth Valley will support their aims to develop and implement the
educational strategy through provision of clinical placements.
Appointment: the appointment will be on a fulltime basis for one year only and
subject to satisfactory on-going appraisal within role.

Salary: In line with current seniority at time of appointment relating to the pay and
conditions of service remuneration of hospital medical and dental staff [NHS
Circular: PCS(DD)2022/02]

6. LOGISTICS
Base
The post holder will be based in Forth Valley Royal Hospital and will spend much
of their time with other clinicians, staff and medical students.
Annual leave
Annual leave is in accordance with the nationally agreed terms and conditions of
the grade of applicant.
Medical Clearance
The offer of appointment is subject to the post holder undergoing relevant
clearances and health checks as dictated by HR Medical Workforce Team.

Qualifications and Experience
The post holder must (at the time of commencement of employment) have full
registration with the GMC. Ideally applicants will have recently completed a UK
based Foundation Programme and understand the UK Healthcare system.
Job Revision

Training Approval
These posts are not recognised for training but have been designed previously in
consultation with the Postgraduate Dean (East) in relation to future employment

Contractual Details
The post holder will be professionally responsible to the Associate Medical Director,
Acute Directorate and managerially responsible to the Clinical Lead for Haematology.
This post is available on a full time basis or part-time basis (fixed term). The
appointment will be subject to the new terms and conditions of service for Doctors in
Training. Formal appointment to the post will be conditional upon satisfactory completion
of all pre-employment checks, including satisfactory medical screening.
This post is offered on a fixed term basis for 12 months from 2nd August 2023 to 6th
August 2024
This appointment will be superannuable under the NHS Superannuation Scheme, which
is contracted out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS). New
employees will automatically be enrolled in the scheme unless they opt out. For further

Annual leave entitlement for the Clinical Development Fellow is 28 days per annum,
rising to 33 days per annum, dependant on salary scale point with additional statutory
holiday entitlement as agreed by the Local Negotiating Committee and published
