Unit 2 "Music of America and Latin America"

Lesson 2 - "Music of Latin America"

1.Latin music is characterized first and foremost by the rhythm. This is

not some background or subtle beat; the rhythm is in many ways the real

focus of the music. But, it's not the only part of the music; melodies and

harmonies are both important parts of this music as well.

2.Similarities- Both styles incorporate syncopation in their harmonies

and melodies. The habanera rhythm, a style of Cuban syncopation, has

been used by many jazz and Latin musicians.

Difference- Latin American Music is widely influenced by colourful and

exotic carnivals and a range of dance styles. Carnivals may include

fanfarras, featuring brass instruments associated with fanfare, and almost

always a samba band while the African music is an emphasis on

rhythmic and metric complexity expressed throughout the musical

system; the use of extended syncopation, or off- beat phrasing of

melodic accents, as a melodic device; the antiphonal call.

3.Conga, Maracas, Siku, Claves, Marimba, Tres, Cajón, and Bombo

legüero

4.Cha-Cha, Merengue, and Samba

Lesson 2-"Jazz"

Activity 1

Similarities Between Blues and Jazz

Both were inventions of African Americans, who combined African

musical concepts with European musical concepts, thus making these

both uniquely American music genres. Mid tempo blues uses a shuffle

beat, while jazz uses a swing beat and both involves guitar, bass, piano,

drums, saxophone, and trumpet.

Difference- Blues involves harmonica, vocals, trombone, and sometimes

fiddle while Jazz involves a clarinet and tuba. Jazz is usually

instrumental, while Blues almost always contains lyrics.

Evaluation

1.Jazz music is a broad style of music characterized by complex

harmony, syncopated rhythms, and a heavy emphasis on improvisation.

Black musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana developed the jazz style in

the early twentieth century.

2. How does jazz influenced today's music?

Since the beginning of Jazz, people have been using its improvisation

factor to express how they feel. Rock, R&B, Hip-hop, Pop and other

genres have been influenced by Jazz. Jazz rhythms and harmonies have

been featured in styles of music that produce a sway rhythm, like R&B

or Latin styled tunes.

3.Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, John Cultrane, Miles Davis,

Charles Mingus, Mary Lou Williams, Keith Jarrett, and Nat King Cole
Questions

1. Art is a expression or application of human creative skill and

imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture,

producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or

emotional power.

2. Art influences society by changing opinions, instilling values and

translating experiences across space and time. Art in this sense is

communication; it allows people from different cultures and different

times to communicate with each other via images, sounds and stories.

Art is often a vehicle for social change.

3. Technology helps broaden the horizons of an artist's creativity while

also limit the problems that they might encounter. It makes the

production of art a lot less demanding, and as a result, artists now have

more time to contemplate and expand their creativity. And honestly, that

is a serious win for art.

4. Technology has become a pervasive influence in our society. It has

especially influenced the way that we create and appreciate art. More
artists are using Photoshop and digital cameras to create and edit pieces

than ever before. Artists are also using computers to connect and gain

inspiration from each other.

5. “Art can be anything; it can be an illustration, a painting, written or

spoken word, music, a performance, or dance. Pieces of art range from

the Van Gogh's paintings in museums, to a child's drawing pinned up

with pride on a fridge. Art evokes emotions, whether they are happy or

sad, disturbing or exciting.

Unit 1- "Modern Art and Elements of Design"

Lesson 1-"Modern art movements and Digital art"

Activity 1-"Learn and Share"

Having a style that is newer and different from older, more traditional

styles modern dance

Activity 2
1. Starry Night

2. a state of shock

3. More intensely, perhaps, than ever before, Van Gogh was interested in

the material actuality of his motifs as much as in their symbolic

dimensions.

4. Van Gogh used an impulsive, gestural application of paint and

symbolic colors to express subjective emotions. These methods and

practice came to define many subsequent modern movements from

Fauvism to Abstract Expressionism.

5. I’ve had the most magnificent of blessings; I’ve seen the painting in

various museums in the world. Looking at The Starry Night I feel his

passion! Anyone who doesn’t believe that there’s a God, a Great

Creator, need only look upon The Starry Night. I see the frantic

brushstrokes - and his own fingerprints when the brush was not enough -

in a painting that tells us that the universe is in constant movement - a

dance, for the sky (the universe) is never in stasis.

Lesson 1-"Elements of Design"

1. The elements of design are the fundamental aspects of any visual

design which include shape, color, space, form, line, value, and

texture. Graphic designers use the elements of design to create an

image that can convey a certain mood, draw the eye in a certain

direction, or evoke a number of feelings.

2. 1. Lines

The first and most basic element of design is the line. In design, a

line is any two connected points. These lines can be straight or

curved, and may be smooth, rough, continuous, broken, thick, or

thin. A line creates division and hierarchy within your design,

helping direct the user’s eye toward specific information or a

specific focal point.

2. Shapes

The second element of design is shape, when a two-dimensional

line encloses an area. A shape can be geometric (like a circle,

triangle, or square), or it can be organic (such as leaves, flowers,

and animals). Boundaries—including lines and color—ultimately

define shapes and can also help emphasize an area of the page.

3. Colors

Color is another powerful element of design. It can stand alone, act

as a background, or highlight other elements in your design.

4. Typography

Typography is arguably the single most important part of graphic,

web, and user interface design. Your text and how it looks isn’t

just about conveying a message; it can also convey a mood. Are

you a serious online newspaper or a playful blog? Typography can

set the tone.

5. Texture

Texture refers to the way a surface feels—or in this case of a

digital design, a perception of how it could feel. Texture can create

a more dynamic, visually appealing experience while also adding

depth to your design.

6. Space
Space refers to the area above, below, around, or behind an object.

It can be positive or negative. Positive space refers to the subject

or areas of interest, such as a person’s face or furniture in a room.

Negative (or “white”) space, on the other hand, refers to the

background area that surrounds the subject or areas of interest.

EVALUATION

For me, this poster utilized the 6th element which is the space.

 Enhance readability — A larger white space ensures text doesn’t

have to compete with other design elements.

 Simplified design — White space breaks the design into chunks so

that we do not overwhelm the reader’s eye.

 Complete an image — Humans naturally see closed shapes.

Therefore, when a shape or element is incomplete, the white space

can help the reader unconsciously fill the gaps.

 Sense of luxury — “Less is more” can create a sense of

sophistication in the design. (print poster next page)
