Formulating Claims of Fact, Policy and Value

In this task, imagine yourself to be a candidate for President in your Student Supreme Government. You
will be asked to present your platform in front of your fellow students. Now, just cite the different claims
that you are going to include in your platform about the school or about the students. Formulate two
sentences for each type of claim. An example is given below. Write this in a short bond paper.

Name of Candidate: Melrose L. Villaflores

Position running for: (P.IO.) Public Information Officer

Title of Platform: “Say NO to Foul Language”

Claim of Fact

Foul language is used by students for a variety of reasons. Some swear to attract their teacher's or
classmates' attention. Certain students swear to impress their friends. Some of them swear, so that they
can express powerful emotions such as rage, distress, or dissatisfaction. And some swear to avenge
those who have harmed them.

When a child attracts attention with inappropriate language, other children may begin to copy him in
order to gain attention, to fit in, or simply because the phrases sound amusing.

Claim of Policy

If a student can be heard saying such words, schoolmates and fellow classmates must tell the president
in the classroom. He/she will thereafter be required to pay five pesos for using vulgar words.

The school officials can use this policy to raise funds if students continue to violate the law. The funds
earned will be used to support the student government's programs and to buy the necessary materials
for the programs.

Claim of Value

Using foul language can be a habit. Adopting bad habits is a common human shortcoming that many,
including myself, share. Whether it's poor language or carelessness, we all have traits that can lead us
into trouble.

This allows students to exercise self-control and to flourish in a safe and friendly setting.
Read the instructions per task and write your answers in your notebook.

9. “The United States is the greatest nation on earth,” is a claim of value.

10. “Obesity can cause heart disease,” is a claim of value.

Task 10: Choose one from the topics below. When you have decided on your topic, formulate three
claims. One for claim of fact, another one for claim of policy and one for the claim of value.

Saving the Environment

Claim of Fact

Waste Disposal

Waste is produced at an alarming rate and dumped into the oceans. Nuclear waste, as well as plastic
and electronic trash, are extremely hazardous.

Claim of Policy

Compost it!Don’t Dump it!

Compostable materials include fruit and vegetable waste, egg shells, coffee grounds, grass clippings, and
leaves. While composting requires more effort than the other lifestyle modifications discussed above, it
will deliver a favorable return on your time and effort invested. So, people should start on composting
the trash to stop on dumping it anywhere.

Claim of Value

The compost sites can be fertilizers. People can save on fertilizers and if they grow their own vegetables,
they’ll likely see improved yields. The organic matter will also act as a sponge to absorb more water,
meaning people might not need to water the plants as much, saving you money and time.
