PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

1.Technical Introduction
The Pipe Conveyed Logging (PCL) is used to provide assurance that the
logging tools will be able to successfully survey the intended interval of
the wellbore.
 The hole deviation exceeds the limits of the instrument’s free-fall.

Pipe Conveyed Logging ( PCL )

PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

1.Technical Introduction
 Difficult hole conditions warrant PCL use such as: washouts, ledges,
restrictions, excessive dogleg deviation, high hydrostatic pressure.
 The customer simply elects to reduce this uncertainty.

1.Technical Introduction

Applying the "wet connector system" method, we

can provide to customers with nearly all logging
services in sidetracking, high deviation, horizontal ,
extended reach horizontal wells.

 Modular Kit

 Female Wet Connector & Sinker Bar

 Side-Entry Sub

 Auxiliary Tools

Length 2.75 meters , O.D.

50mm, and 7 copper rings are
connected with 7 cable cores
respectively. The lower part of
the housing is equipped with
locking device, which can lock
the lower joint of the sinker bar
and release it under certain
tension.

3.Opreation Procedure
 Connect PCL Subs onto Bottom of Drillpipe (DP)

The tools are rigged up as a

normal logging job. Instead of
connecting the cablehead to
communicate with the tools,
connect the PCL subs
containing the male wet
connector.
This is screwed onto the
bottom of the drillpipe
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
 Winch Down the Female Wet Connector

The wireline is already run through the

Side-Entry Sub (SES) and connected to
the sinker bar/female connector. The
sinker bar/female connector is lowered
into the drillpipe, and the SES is
screwed onto the top of the drillpipe.
The sinker bar/female connector
assembly is winched down to the male
connector and an electrical latch is
achieved.
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
 Switch on the Tools

After a successful electrical

and mechanical latch, the
tools are switched on. The
cable is clamped to the SES
and logging can start.
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
 Begin Logging

With the tool power on, logging

can begin. Drillpipe is added on
top until the pre determined data
depth is achieved. Then the
operation is reversed until the
SES is at the rig floor. The cable
is unlatched, spooled out of the
hole, and the surface logging
equipment is rigged down. The
tools are then tripped out, until
they are back on the rig floor and
rigged down.

3.Opreation Procedure -Prejob Meeting with drilling crew

Communication is the key asset
to a good job.Need very good
communication between the drill
floor and the WL unit/winch.

A. Explain the rig-up

• Decide where the upper sheave
should be.
• Install grooved Kelly bushing.
• Vertical rig-up of tools.
• Test latch on drill floor.
• Discuss leaving jars out of the
drillstring

3.Opreation Procedure
B. Go in hole
• NO ROTATION OF PIPE ALLOWED.
• Run in speed 2 minutes per stand the first 500 m, then increase
to 1 min/stand. When open hole is reached, run in at 2 min/stand
• For every ___ stands, circulate the volume of the last ___
stands run in hole. (Frequency depends on mud content )
• Set and pull slips carefully, to avoid a yo-yo effect on tools.
• Use a minimum of dope with a brush on the pin
connection.(Better do not use any dope)
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
C. At latching depth
• Circulate at a low rate while conducting a safety meeting.
• If sheaves not installed, rig crew install sheaves.
• Install large OD stabilizer.
• Lift up SES and sinker bar, RIH 100m (328ft) with sinker bar.
• Install SES and tighten to specified torque.
• Install metal wear bushings.
• Connect pup joint to SES.
• Prepare to RIH with the sinker bar with no pumping.

D. Running in cable
• WL team to run in logging cable.
• Stop when cable tension drop.
• Line up cable with groove in the kelly bushing and lower the SES below
rotary table.
• Start pumping at a rate indicated by the PCL specialist.
• STOP pumps when sinker bar assy. is approx. 120 m (400 ft) above latch
depth.
• Take pick-up weight.
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
E.Latching
• Start pumps at rate indicated by PCL specialist.Increase pump rate to
achieve logging speed of 90m/min.
• Check for good latch. Indications are:
• Electrical.
• Drop in cable weight
• Pressure increase in stand pipe
• Mechanical test on wet connect
• Pull back SES above rotary table.
• Spool out 5–10 meters (16.4–32 ft) slack in hole.
F. Installing the SES line clamp
• Break off stand above SES and drain for mud.
• Remove metal wear bushing, install pack off rubber assembly and tighten.
• Install cable clamp.
• Test-pull to 60% the breaking strength of the shear screw.
• Hold tension for 5 min.
• RESET HOIST PANEL DEPTH TO BOTTOM OF TOOL.
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
G. Logging down and up
• Logging speeds determined by logging
engineer.
• Establish 100% good communication between
driller and winch man.
• Take it easy in the beginning.
• Do not move or stop the pipe before informing
the winch man.
• Winch operator to maintain back-tension as per
simulation for down and up logging unless
otherwise specified.
• Fill pipe, if not filling by itself.
• No rotation of pipe, lock rotary table.
• Roughnecks to watch cable when slips is pulled
and set.
• STOP if tension/compression on tools reaches
pre-determined values.
• NEVER TAG BOTTOM WITH LOGGING
TOOLS.
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
H. Back at surface with SES
• Keep cable weight in back tension.
• Take off cable plate and cable clamp.
• Lower SES below rotary.
• Clear floor and pull cable free.
• At approx. 100 meters below rotary, pull back SES and break off.
• Rig down SES, wet connect and sheave wheels
• Continue out of hole at 1 min/stand.
• Set slips carefully, no yo-yo effect.
I. At surface
• Do test last to verify tool response.
• Rig down logging tool.s
PIPE CONVEYED LOGGING

3.Opreation Procedure
J. Emergency procedures
• Can always circulate during logging, as long as you are within the
limits.
• Limitations are:
• Continuous flow 1003 l/min. (265 gal/min)
• Max. flow for short time 1514 l/min. (400 gal/min)
• Max. pressure during logging 1000 psi.
• Explain emergency pull-out.
• Break the shear screws on the SES cable clamp
• Pull the sinker bar latch rings free
• Torpedo weak point will break at SES
• Pull cable out of drill pipe
• Ball will seal SES
• Pull cable to surface.
