I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
a. understand the story of “The Story of Aged Mother
b. discover the moral lesson of the story
c. demonstrate the love and respect for elders

II. SUBJECT MATTER:


A. Topic: “The story of the Aged Mother” (A Japanese Folktale) by Matsuo
Basho
B. References: Books and Internet sources
C. Materials: Projector, Laptop, Speaker
D. Skills: Reading, Speaking, Writing
E. Value: The love of a mother towards to her children is unconditional. We
should also do our best to show our love to them as they grow older.

B. Motivation

I have here a song entitled “Iingatan ka” by Carol Banawa, I want you to close
your eyes as we listen to its chorus. Afterwards the teacher will ask the following
questions.

“Iingatan ka
Aalagaan ka
Sa puso ko ikaw ang pag-asa
Sa „ting mundo‟y
May gagabay sa iyo
Ang alay ko‟y itong pagmamahal ko
May nagmamahal aakay sa iyo
Aking inay ikaw ang nagbigay ng buhay ko
Buhay na kay ganda
Pangarap ko na makamtan ko na”

Today, we will discuss a short story that centers on love- a topic I‟m sure everyone
would be interested at. Well this is a kind of Japanese Folktale entitled “The Story of
Aged Mother”

C. LESSON PROPER

But before that let me first present to you our lesson objectives for today.

Let us have first the author behind this text that we will discuss.

a) Author presentation

1. Matsuo Basho was born in year 1644


2. He was recognized as the greatest master of Haiku.
3. Matsuo Basho was died in November 28, 1694.
4. He was died at the age of 50 y/o.
5. He also wrote Sumidawara (A Sack of Charcoal) 1694
6. He was a poet.

b) Vocabulary
As we have read the story, we will encounter some difficult words. What we will
do is to unlock the meaning of these following words through the use of context
clues present on the following sentences.

1. The poor farmer loved his aged Mother with tender reverence, and the
order filled his heart with sorrow.
2. Long, long ago there lived at the foot of a mountain a poor farmer and

his aged, widowed mother.

3. Those were barbarous days, and the custom of abandoning old people
to die was not uncommon.
4. But no one ever thought a second time about obeying the mandate of
a daimio.
5. The road was long and steep
6. He plodded steadily.
7. In some places, they mingled in a confused puzzle, but he gave no
heed.
8. The trembling mother‟s voice was full of unselfish love as she gave her
injunction.
9. That very hour the cruel law was abolished, and custom drifted into as
far a past that only legend remains.
c) Story Discussion
Now that we know the difficult words in the text, we can now start.
The teacher will ask the students to watch the video of the story. The teacher
also give a copies of the poem.
The teacher will ask the following questions.

1. What cruel proclamation did the daimio make?


2. Where did the son take his mother? What did his mother do along the
way to the mountain?
3. How did the son hide his mother from the daimio?
4. Where the story happen?
5. Why did daimio abolish his cruel law?
6. If the present administration proclaimed a law to abandon your aged
mother, what will you do?

D. ACTIVITY
For our next activity I will group you into 3 groups. Can I have the representative
of each group to pick your assigned task.

The students are tasked to demonstrate how they love and appreciate the love and
wisdom they acquire from their mothers through the following:

Group I- Role Play

Group II- Song

Group III- Poem
