Phrasal verbs (verb + preposition)


1. To fall out with sb = to stop being friends because of an argument
Eg ; I had a fight with my friends and we fell out ….
Eg : She was my friend but we fell out after what she did.
Eg ; I fell out with Jack because he kept texting my girlfriend.
2. To stick together = to stay strong and together, to support each other
Eg; I know it is a very tough time, but as a family we have to stick together.
Eg; it is a difficult project, but if we stick together we can do it.
3. To put sb down= to try to criticize someone to make them feel bad about
themselves.
Eg; I hate my boss. He puts me down all the time.
Eg; why did you put me down in front of all those peoples.
4. To stick up for sb = to try to support them in front of others
Eg; your friend will stick up for you.
Eg; don’t worry! He will try to put you down, but I will stick up for you.
Eg; I don’t need your help, I will stick up for myself.
5. To give in = to finally agree to sth that you initially disagreed with
Eg; your father would give in and buy you a new laptop.
Eg; keep asking and he will finally give in.
Eg; My child kept crying all day. I gave in and I bought it for him.

1. To talk somethings over= to talk about a problem with another person in


order to know their opinion or ask for advice
Eg; I’d like to talk it over with my wife first.
Eg; Employees had 2 weeks to talk the proposal over with their families before
making the decision.
2. To sort something out= to successfully solve a problem
Eg; We had a productive meeting. I felt we sorted it out a lot of problem.
3. To deal with something/somebody= do something, try to solve a problem
Eg; Don’t worry Jake I will deal with him myself.
4. To face up to somethings= a problematic situations, to accept that there is
a problem
Eg; She has to face up to the fact that he is guilty.
Eg; They will never offer you another job. You might as well face up to it.
5. To come up with something/to come up with an idea/ a solution=to think
of an idea, a solution to try to find or introduce a solution to a problem
Eg; We have been asked to come up with some new ideas.
Eg; Is that the best you can do? You have to come up with a better solution.
6. To narrow somethings down= to try to make a list of things smaller and
smaller by crossing out the unnecessary or the worse options on the list
Eg; That is quite a long list. You have to narrow it down.
Eg; well, 20? That’s a lot of solutions. You have to narrow it down to less than 5.

1. To keep up with something=to continue doing, to study during


the term and not keep everything for the last night before the
exam
Eg; Keep up your study.

2. To brush up on something=to review and learn somethings that


you studied in the past and you might have forgotten
Eg; To brush up on the vocabulary that you learned before.

3. To mug up = to try to learn something quickly, to try to learn the


main points of a thing very quickly, usually the night before the
exam
4. To scrape through= to succeed at doing something, but barely/
to pass the test with the lowest minimum mark
5. To swot up on =to learn as much as you can about something
6. To polish up= to practice and improve your knowledge of
something
7. To pick up something= to learn something by hearing it and
absorbing it but not studying and reading

1. See somebody off= to go to an airport/a station to say goodbye to


somebody who is traveling
Eg; They have gone to the airport to see their son off.
2. To set off = to start, to begin the journey
Eg; We set off for Paris at night.
3. To get on = to enter the train/the board
4. To get in = to enter the car/taxi
5. To take off= An airplane that is leaving the airport
Eg; What time is the plane taking off.
6. To get off = to exit, to go out on the bus
7. To pick somebody up= to let somebody get into your car and then you
take them somewhere that they want to go
Eg; The hotel shuttle will pick you up after you get off the plane
8. To drop somebody off = to take somebody to a place and let them be
there
Eg; the shuttle will drop you off exactly in front of the hotel.
9. To check in =to give your identity documents, take the keys and go to
your room
Eg; When you want to check in at a hotel you need to show your ID card.
10.To check out= to leave the hotel, to put the keys back where they were to
get your ID card
Eg; The checkout was at 12, but we left at 11.
11.To get away= to take a vacation, to take a holiday, to go on a trip, to leave
everything behind you
Eg; I’m very busy these days, but I’m tired I just wanna get away for a few days.
Eg; Christmas is ahead of us. I would love to get away for a few days.

1. To sleep on somethings= to wait and think about it


before making decision
2. To do without somethings= to live without
somethings
3. To weigh up somethings= to think about
something, considering both the positive sides and
the negative sides and then weigh them up to see
which one stronger
4. To run somethings by somebody=to tell somebody
about what is happening and to ask for their
opinion
5. To think ahead to plan ahead = to think before
something happen/ plan before something
happens/ to think and plan about what you want to
do in future
6. To think something over= to think carefully before
making the decision/ to think about all aspects of
somethings before making the decision
7. To think through= to think about the possible
consequences.
8. To bargain for something= to expect something to
happen / I don’t expect this to happen
9. To chicken out= to stop doing something in the very
last minute, because you are frightened.

I think I’ve fallen for the new guy who just started work in or office, he fitted in
at once. He and I get along really well, but he hasn’t asked me out yet .What
should I do?
1. Fall for someone= to suddenly become very attracted to someone
2. To fit in= to join a group and feel very comfortable and simply become
part of the group
3. To get along with someone= to have a good relationship with someone,
to be friendly with someone and want to talk to someone and spend time
with them
Eg; We brother and I get along very well with each other.
4. To ask someone out= to invite somebody you like to a concert, a museum,
an event, a movie, a bar or drink to start a relationship.
I’ve been going out with my boyfriend for 10 months now. And we are planning
to get married next year, bur last week we fell or over something really stupid.
He heard a male friend of mine telling me my hair looks nice, and he thought it
was a chat-up line. HE got so jealous and wouldn’t speak to me. Do you think a
minor falling out like this is a bad sing for a future marriage? Or am I worrying
too much?
5. Going out with somebody for a period of time= to be in a romantic
relationship with someone
Eg; Are you guys going out?
6. A chat-up= a way of speaking and talking in away that you are attracted
to someone, and you want to make someone attracted to you
My boyfriend and I have just split up after a year together, for the first 6 months
everything was great, but them we just seem to drift apart. I didn’t really want
to finish with him, but he wanted to break off our relationship. Should I ask him
if we can start again and try to rediscover the magic of those first 6 months?
7. To split up= to end a relationship
8. To drift apart= to become less friendly little but little and gradually
overtime, you stop being in a relationship

Weather delays cup final

yesterday due to bad weather.
Kick off (noun) = the start of a game of soccer

Eg; Today, there are 6 soccer games kicking off.
Archer England defeated
Archery = a sport which is about shooting with a bow and an arrow
England were knocked out of the European archery championship this
afternoon in a surprise win by Sweden
2. To be knocked out = to be forced to leave the competition/to be defeated
3. To knock somebody off= to hit somebody so hart that they fall and go
unconscious

tomorrow’s 100-nete freestyle event
4. To go for somethings= to try hard to achieve somethings which is difficult
Danton to play Hartsfield
With both teams on 28 points, Darnton will meet Hartsfield in a playoff this

5. Play off= a game to decide who would go higher
I work out at the gym 3 times a week to try to burn off the calories and stay
slim. I find it also helps me to work off the stress of work

6. To work out= to do sports, to do physical activities in order to make


yourself stronger, or to become physically fit
7. To burn off somethings= to work hard to get rid of somethings, to remove
somethings
8. To work somethings off= to get rid of somethings (usually an emotion
which is negative)

Before we start a match, I always do a warm-up. Then, after the match I make
sure to cool down and stretch properly.
9. A warm up= the first thing you do before you do sports or a physical
activity, a very gentle activity just to warm you up to prepare you for the
real exercise
10.To cool down= to do some very gentle exercises to help your muscles
become cooler
World class marathon running can be very hard. You need great mental stamina
and you must never give in. It’s a great feeling when you pull ahead of the rest
of the field and know you are winning.
11.To pull ahead = to get ahead of other people who were running with you
at the same speed
Table tennis is a great sport, Anyone can join in. We have a knock out
competition at work ever month, just for fun!
12.To join in= to become involved in an activity with other people
13.A knock- out competition= a competition that only the winners of each
stage are allowed to play in the next stage
