Q.1 A vertical circular pipe of 15 cm diameter connected to a circular disc of 40 cm (5)
diameter. The width of the circular disc at the outlet is 30 mm. For the given flowrate of
120 liter/s, estimate the radial component of the velocity of the fluid through circular
disc, as shown in the Figure. Also calculate the axial velocity of fluid in the circular
pipe.

Q.2 Consider water flowing through the uniformly varying rectangular duct (5)
having length 80 cm and dimensions at inlet 50 X 40 cm 2 and at outlet
100 X 40 cm2. For the following conditions, calculate the local and
convective acceleration at a section 40 cm from the inlet:
(i) constant flow rate of 250 L/s
(ii) at 2 second if the flow rate varies from 250 L/s to 500 L/s in
5 sec.

Q.3 The resistance R due to wind on a tall vertical chimney is dependent on (5)
density ρ, viscosity μ of air, wind velocity V and diameter D, height H of
the chimney. Obtain the expression for Resistance R by Buckingham’s Π
theorem.

Q.4 In order to prevent terrorist entry from the Arabian sea, a submarine is (5)
to be designed for patrolling purpose. The length of the submarine is
1.6 m and moving at a speed of 12.6 km/h. As a model testing engineer
you are responsible to test a geometrically similar model of length 30 cm
in a wind tunnel at a speed of 35 m/s. If the drag force during model
testing is observed as 40 N, calculate the drag forced experienced by the
prototype. Also calculate pressure of air in the model. The property are
as follows:
= 998 kg/m3 at density of air at standard atmospheric pressure = 1.17 kg/m3,
Dynamic viscosity of air = 1.9 × 10-5 Pa.s at local atmospheric pressure
and dynamic viscosity of water = 1.0 × 10 -3 Pa.s.

Q.5 Water flows through a converging pipe inclined at an angle of 25 o with (5)
horizontal, dimensions for pipe are as follows:
Section 1: Diameter =0.508 m, Elevation from reference=190 cm
velocity= 5.27 m/s.

Section 2: Diameter = 0.254 m , Elevation from reference= 540 cm
