the title of our lesson for today is determining the ways a writer can elucidate a concept by definition explication

and
clarification

First we are going to discuss the three ways of defining a concept these are sometimes called the types of definition

which are the informal, formal, and extended definitions

afterwards we will understand how to use explication and clarification in explaining a concept examples will be
provided and explained

What is a concept?

-in simple terms a concept is an abstract idea or a general notion

-also it can mean a plan or intention moreover a concept is also an idea or invention to help sell or publicize a
commodity

-in philosophy a concept is an idea or mental picture of a group or class of objects formed by combining all their
aspects basically concepts are the essence to both the academic and professional fields

Let's discuss further, the concept or idea of a writer whether used for creative or academic and professional
purposes can be clearly explained through definition, explication, and clarification, let me discuss this 1 by 1

Difinition

first let's have the definition, I believe this is a term you are already familiar with, definition is a method of
identifying a given term and making each meaning clearer, so if you are trying to introduce a certain concept or a
new idea or any uncommon term, and you want to have a clearer meaning of it, definition is what you need to make
use of

3 ways

there are three ways of defining a concept, first is informal definition where known words or examples are used to
explain an unknown term these definitions are maybe synonyms or antonyms

let's analyze the following examples the first term is COVID-19 the second one is alma mater and the third one is
freedom

-notice that the underline phrases are only additional words to provide meaning to these terms these are called
informal definitions because these supplemental words have no formal or strict rule in terms of its parts

- sometimes these are just phrases sometimes these are sentences too

-using informal definitions in concepts provide immediate and simple meaning to certain terms which are
emphasized by the writer

Formal Definition

now let's proceed to formal definition, well all you must remember is that these type of definition contains three
parts

the term which is the word to be defined

the class which is the group where the term belongs and
the distinguishing characteristics which are the characteristics of the term which separates it from the other
members of the group

what do you observe from this example: this dictionary definition of memorandum has the three parts the term
class and distinguishing characteristics

remember that the definition will not be called formal without these three parts, so if the term only has its class it
will be an informal definition, if the term has only that distinguishing characteristics again it will be an informal
definition

to understand differences between formal and informal definitions the following examples are provided note that,
for formal definitions the class or group where the term belongs are underlined while the distinguishing
characteristics are italicize

now let us analyze the differences of the following terms which defined informally and formally for the term formula
a group of numerical symbols is the class hence it lacks the distinguishing characteristics as compared to its formal
definition

for the second term instinct you will notice that the informal and formal definitions are two different definitions
totally choosing which one will depend on the context of the readers

lastly for the term play two simple informal definitions are provided yet for its formal definition you will notice that
all the formal definition parts are present the term the class and that distinguishing characteristics

EXTENDED DEFINITION

moving further let's talk about extended definition this type of definition entails additional details that may include
the following: providing the origin or etymology, by comparison and contrast, by cause and effects, by illustration
and by analysis.

let's examine the example provided you will see here that this paragraph contains a formal definition where there
are three parts

the term concept paper

the class a document and the characteristics of that term that is which summarizes what your project is about why
it is important and how you intend to carry it out.

my question though is having this formal definition alone do you already understand what a concept paper is

well if your answer is no or not yet you have a good point this is because the meaning provided even if it is using a
formal definition it really is not enough,

keep this in mind there are some instances where in one formal definition is not adequate to provide the meaning
of an entire concept Hence extended definition is needed

tan awi ninyo ang naka underline, diba more components were provided, it consists of the topic and the research,
the hypothesis that you seek to approve or disapprove research questions later required and methods of obtaining it
synonyms were also added it is sometimes known as a proposal or an abstract that is synonym then comparison and
contrast were also included; the latter two are usually more detailed than a concept paper but often serve the same
purpose that is to convince the valuating it that the research paper is worthwhile

now understanding what a concept paper is will be easier because of the extended definition
I believe that you are now ready to move forward to the second technique that can be used to elucidate on a
concept

EXPLICATION

let's talk about explication this is a method of explanation in which sentences versus quotes or passages are taken
from a literary or academic work and interpreted and explained in a detailed way

- for you to easily remember this your clue is a statement quoted directly or indirectly which is being explained and
elaborated

-sometimes statements uttered or written or worth note taking yet not quite understandable by so thus explication
is needed

observe these paragraph notice that in the example given the author explained stiffen grations theory of second
language acquisition in fact some terms such as be acquired system and the learned system where coated and then
elaborated this is an explication since some terms were taken from an academic work then explained and elaborated
in detailed way, got it?

CLARIFICATION

Now let's proceed to the last one which is clarification basically this is a method of explanation in which the points
are organized from a general or abstract idea to specific or concrete examples

-bear in mind that clarification is the logical organization of Ideas, when we clarify a concept, then we organize our
thoughts and we make sure that whatever is not clear to our readers or listeners we will be able to help them

-commonly we provide examples or illustrations also diagrams or infographics can be used to visualize our main
points

Let's read this text and do clarification afterwards this sample text written by the World Health Organization was
organized according to order of importance which is from the top to the bottom 10 this shows a logical or
reasonable organization of data written in one competition

let's examine the paragraph closely if you are going to read it you will notice that the first paragraph starts with a
topic sentence about the top ten causes of death in 2016 right after that the top two causes of death were
mentioned which ours ischaemic Heart disease and stroke the second paragraph indicated the top three to six
causes which are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease lung cancer along with trachea and bronchus cancers
diabetes and dementia respectively the third paragraph revealed the top seven to nine causes which are lower
respiratory infections diarrheal diseases and tuberculosis lastly the fourth paragraph the top ten cause was revealed
which is more on road injuries

when you clarify a certain concept remember to ensure that the organization or arrangement of your data is logically
written so that your readers will be able to understand your work clearly and easily is clarification clear note that the
main purpose of this is to organize and emphasize the important details
