ASSIGNMENT 1 2
There were many theorists with views of critical influence over the years in terms of

classroom management. From the many theories, there were 6 main points that are still being

applied today, that being from Fritz Redl, William Wattenberg, Jacob Kounin, Rudolf Dreikurs,

William Glasser, and Haim Ginott (Hardin, 2012). William Glasser’s account was most

interesting to me, in terms of responsibility he believed that each individual is responsible for

their own behavior and is not a result of their past, society, or heredity. Additionally, he agrees

that individuals can develop better lives through support and guidance however that each

individual behaves a certain way in order to match their own necessities and to shape the

environment around them. While there were points where I could agree with Glasser, I don’t

fully agree with a few of his statements. Within the first point Glasser makes he separates the

accountability of outside influence on each individual’s lives. I believe that society, each

individual’s past, and hereditary values do influence people to some extent. While other

individuals are strong enough to overcome hardship the same cannot be said for others.

Sometimes you cannot escape from the situations you find yourself in, so I cannot fully agree

with his statement claiming that an individual is fully responsible for being the way they are. I do

however agree with Glasser’s remaining statements which speak of support and individual

behavior affecting the environment around them.

In the text, Effective classroom management: Models and strategies for today’s

Classroom by Carlette Hardin it states “In a quality school, students satisfy four psychological

needs: the need to belong, the need for power, the need for freedom, and the need for fun”

(Hardin, 2012). Towards this statement, I fully agree with Glasser. To develop effective learning

for students, you have to create the right environment with the right resources available. His

suggestion isn’t for the individual teacher alone, but rather towards an institutional change.
ASSIGNMENT 1 3
Teaching students to have empathy, seek greater things in life, to live the life they’ve always

wanted, and to have fun while doing so are all aspects of success in their own ways. By meeting

student’s individual and wholistic needs we can create a better student body and a future

generation of adults that can take the world by storm.

Similar in thought to this regard is the observation evaluated by Haim Ginott. Rather than

sticking to traditional behavioral approaches, Ginott suggests that positive open communication

is key to effective classroom discipline. He noticed that as the authoritarian figure, we as students

shape the way the class develops as a unit. Ginnott’s definition of classroom management

involves supportive interactions, humanized students, and a community of active learners

willingly learning because they know it’s what they need to do and understand the consequences

of their own actions (Hardin, 2012). To Ginnot’s theory, I’d have to wholeheartedly agree with

his methodology. I feel that we as teachers should give our students more credit than we already

do, as growing members in our society we have to start treating them as adults if we want them

to develop the necessary skills they need to thrive in this world. By humanizing our students and

getting rid of the traditional rewards and punishments system we allow these students more

freedom to explore themselves as individuals, taking on higher responsibilities and supporting

each other as a community. In the text, Teach Like a Champion 2.0: 62 Techniques That Put

Students on the Path to College by Doug Lemov, they speak of the 5 principals of classroom

culture, which is discipline, management, control, influence, and engagement. In relation to all of

these principals it’s important to note that all 5 of these aspects include influence and change

from the educator.

In conclusion, if I were to take the best qualities of both theories I would take in mind

that the responsibility of the student is inevitably upon the individual. As a teacher I can do my

best to promote and provide a strong healthy learning environment, with open communication

and emotional support. It’s also important for me to work at an institution that harbors similar

ideals, ensuring that there are no double standards or lack of student support in the faculty/admin

team. As an educator I have to be especially aware that I have a large responsibility upon the

influence I have towards the students, my behavior, responses, and even my mood can impact

them as I’m a decisive factor of the classroom.
