Context Clues
• Context clues are hints you can find about a word’s meaning by looking carefully at the other
words in a sentence.
• Context clues can be found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to
understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words.
• Context Clues refers to define a difficult or unusual words and phrase.

Why Context Clues are important?


• The understanding and successful application of context clues is crucial for academic
performance and taking an entrance exam. They can improve every individual’s vocabulary,
comprehension, and it enhances the reader’s ability to read well.
Given that context clues are so important for interpreting the context. Studying context cues
will benefit readers in comprehending complex words.

TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES


DEFINITION – The author provides the actual definition of the unknown word.
• Clues to definition include, that is, commas, dashes, and parentheses, is/are known as, is/are
called, means, and is defined as.
• Always look at the sentence before or after the unknown word to see if the author explains
what the word means.
EXAMPLES:
Abbey was repulsed by the spider craw up in her arm. She had feeling disgust and dislike.
A ship that can travel under the surface of the ocean is a submarine.

EXAMPLE – There might be an example of what the unknown word in the context.
• Clues to example include, including, such as, for example, and for instance.
• If you see examples in the sentence, it is “Example Clues”.
EXAMPLES:
