As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use
this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while
allowing them to manage their own learning at home. Furthermore, you are
expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included

Let Us Study

Am I Already Infected?
In the recent post, the Philippines has seen many outbreaks of emerging
infectious diseases and it continues to be susceptible to the threat of re-
emerging infections (Department of Health [DOH], 2017). Thus, it is better to
further understand how infections take place.

Stages of Infection

• Incubation Stage is the first stage of infection when a person is sick. It is

the period starting from entry of the pathogen until appearance of the first
sign. For example: chicken pox it takes 2 to 3 weeks incubation. For
common cold, 1 to 2 days of incubation, influenza takes 1 to 3 days, and
15 to 18 days for mumps.
• Prodromal Stage is the second stage of infection which starts from onset
of non-specific signs and symptoms such as low-grade fever, depression
and fatigue.

2
• Illness Stage is the third stage of infection which begins when more
specific signs and symptoms appear. For example, common cold is
characterized by sore throat, sinus congestion, and rhinitis, mumps
manifested by earache, high fever, and salivary gland swelling.
• Convalescence Stage is the last stage of infection when acute symptoms
of infection disappear. It is the recovery stage that may take several days
to months. The length of recovery depends on the severity of infection and
the patient’s general state of health.

Below is the process of stages of infection in an illustration (Too Much Viro Is

Mad, 2010).

Let Us Practice
TELL ME!
Based on the figure below, identify and arrange the stages of infection in
sequential order and discuss each stage.

STAGES OF INFECTION

Let Us Practice More

Complete the table below by filling in the correct information
about the stages of infection and its signs and symptoms
respectively.

Stage of Infection Signs and Symptoms

4
Let Us Remember

Stages of Infection
• The stages of infection start with incubation stage followed by
prodromal stage, next is illness stage and lastly, convalescence or
recovery stage.

• Incubation stage happens when the first sign appears and its duration
for example in chicken pox takes 2 to 3 weeks incubation, for common
cold, 1 to 2 days of incubation, influenza takes 1 to 3 days, and 15 to
18 days for mumps. Prodromal stage happens when onset of non-
specific signs and symptoms starts. Low grade fever, depression and
fatigue are signs and symptoms in prodromal stage. Illness stage
happens when more specific signs and symptoms appear. If it is in an
illness stage, already common cold for example is characterized by sore
throat, sinus congestion, and rhinitis, mumps manifested by earache,
high fever, and salivary gland swelling. Convalescence or recovery
stage happens when acute symptoms of infection disappear. The
length of recovery depends on the severity of infection and the patient’s
general state of health that takes several days or months under the
convalescence stage.

Let Us Assess
Direction: Choose and encircle the letter of the correct answer
of each question.

1. What does the body experiences during Prodromal stage?

a. It is time from the moment of exposure to an infectious agent.
b. Infection starts from onset of non-specific signs and symptoms.
c. Most severe signs and symptoms are felt.
d. The body regains or returns to a normal condition.

2. What stage of infection starts from entry of the pathogen until

appearance of the first sign?
a. Incubation stage c. Illness Stage
b. Prodromal Stage d. Convalescence Stage

3. What is the last stage of infection when acute symptoms of infection

disappear?
a. Incubation stage c. Illness Stage
b. Prodromal Stage d. Convalescence Stage

5
4. What happens when a child’s body undergoes convalescence stage of
infection?
a. His/Her body is not recovering yet from infection.
b. His/Her acute symptoms of infection disappear.
c. His/Her body experiences signs and symptoms.
d. His/Her fever’s temperature gets higher.

5. What stage of infection deals with common colds where sore throat is
one of the symptoms?
a. Incubation stage c. Illness Stage
b. Prodromal Stage d. Convalescence Stage

6. What stage of infection has fatigue as one of its symptoms?

a. Incubation stage c. Illness Stage
b. Prodromal Stage d. Convalescence Stage

7. When does your body undergo recovery stage?

a. Incubation stage c. Illness Stage
b. Prodromal Stage d. Convalescence Stage

8. What is the duration of incubation for chicken pox?

a. 1 to 2 weeks c. 3 to 4 weeks
b. 2 to 3 weeks d. 4 to 5 weeks

9. What does the length of recovery depend on?

a. lifestyle
b. effectivity of medicine
c. food intake
d. severity of infection

10. What is the duration of incubation for mumps?

a. 5 to 8 days c. 14 to 17 days
b. 10 to 13 days d. 15 to 18 days

6
Let Us Enhance
Based on what you have read and understood from the readings
above, describe in your own words the stages of infection given:

1. Incubation stage __________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________

2. Prodromal stage __________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________

3. Illness Stage ______________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________

4. Convalescence Stage ______________________________________________

Let Us Reflect

Today you have learned what are the stages of infection, its symptoms
and duration of each stage. You may have learned that knowing the stages of
infection is very relevant in preventing and controlling diseases and disorders.
The next time you encounter about it, you already know how to discuss its
stages.
Congratulations! You have accomplished this module and you did a
great job! I hope you enjoy answering this module and continue this
enthusiasm with the following modules. See you! God Bless
