Let Us Study

Elements and Principles of Indian Art (Diwali Festival)

• Diwali is a Hindu-originated festival also known as the

“festival of lights”. It is a celebration of colors and lights and
a symbol of victory for light over darkness.
• It is about prosperity and abundance. The light symbolizes
knowledge and wisdom, while darkness is a symbol for all
negative forces such as wickedness, destruction, violence,
lust, envy, injustice, greed, oppression and suffering.
• In India and Indian art Diwali, it is good to use a neutral shade
as a palette and then use a primary warm color for a few well
placed accents.
• Diyas is a little clay oil lamps which symbolizes the triumph
of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over
ignorance.
• Just as a flame of lamp always points upward, Diwali is most
importantly a time to celebrate and appreciate life and to look
forward to the coming year with a renewed purpose and
passion.
