THE ART OF POTTERY
• The art of pottery goes way back to days of our great great grandfathers.
• This special art requires various abilities to master in order to perform this special art.
• Many persons in the old days were engaged in the art of pottery and learned it very
enthusiastically even though it is very hard to master.
• This art of pottery requires to know about all the mechanisms of the clay, the spinning wheel on
which the clay is kept to make pots and how to handle the clay in order to make the perfect pots.
• After making the pots, they should also learn about the firing of the clay which is made into the
shape of a pot in order to make it hard and usable. If its kept in firing for too long it gets spoiled
and if its kept for a short time it doesn’t get strong enough to use and it gets spoiled.
USES OF POTTERY
• The pots made by professional potters are used for many reasons in the olden days.
• During the olden days the pots are used for cooling of the water as, the water kept in an
earthen pot seeps into the small pores in the pot and evaporates from the surface of the
pot. The heat required for evaporation is taken from water inside the pot, thus cooling the
water stored inside.
• During the festival of Diwali, the earthen diyas (oil lamps) are kept as lamps as Diwali is
a called a festival of lights and the firecrackers used that day are lightened using the fire
in the diyas.
• They are used as utensils which are used for cooking of the food, pots used for bringing
and storing of water.
THE REASONS FOR THE DECLINE OF
POTTERY
• There are several reasons for the decline of the pottery.
• One of its main reason is because the skills that are to be mastered are too hard to learn
and the kids of the present generation doesn’t like to do that much hard work.
• Even now some of the old potters still exist and are still making pots but no one is
interested in buying them as they break easily and they are not that attractive to them.
• But still some of the persons buy those pots, the money obtained is not enough for the
surviving of the potters and so naturally they shifted to other professions in order to
sustain living.
WAYS FOR REVIVING OF POTTERY

• Inclusion of pottery education at different education levels can be helpful for the
expansion of knowledge and techniques of this sector.
• Arranging exhibitions & fairs of pottery products in different parts of the countries and
overseas can contribute to the market promotion and increasing market demand.
• Awarding successful potters every year can be an important motivational factor in this
sector.
• Raw materials such as soil, fuel, and others are crucial for pottery. Government and
NGOs can help in this case.
