In this module, you will undergo certain activities that will enable you to
create artworks showing the characteristics and elements of the arts of Luzon
Islands Provinces and apply series of procedures especially in making Pinch Pots.

Introductory Message
A module is a type of learning resource that is essentially self-contained,
self- instructional package with learning paced by the student according to his or
her individual needs and ability (Ali, et.al,2010). It requires the learners to interact
actively with the instructional materials rather than simply allowing them to read
the materials passively (Dick and Carrey, 1990).

This module adheres to the learning competencies of the K-12 Curriculum.


This module helps the learners understand characteristics and salient features of
arts and crafts in Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) showing
its relationship of the elements of art and processes. This module is a useful
learning device that provides the learning objectives, varied activities, key concepts,
generalization, application, and assessment.

For the learner:

This module is created to give meaningful learning in the arts and crafts
of Ilocos and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) especially making Pinch
Pots through different activities. Throughout the activities, you will learn the
various steps on how to make it and exhibit completed artworks for
appreciation and critiquing.

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written to help you create artworks showing
the characteristics of the Arts and Crafts of Ilocos Region and Cordillera
Administrative Region by making Pinch Pots. This module provides activities that
will help you learn the steps in making this artwork.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

• identify characteristics of arts and crafts in specific areas in Luzon (e.g.

• trace the external (foreign) and internal (indigenous) influences reflected in
the design of an artwork and in the making of a craft or artifact. A7PL-Ih-4
• create Pinch Pot as an artwork showing the characteristics of the arts and
crafts based on the materials used found in the local areas. (Clay).

Vocabulary Builders
Ceramics - Clay objects that hold their shape after they have been heated to
specific temperatures.
Clay - Made from earth, water and fire. Clay is different from mud, since it has
plasticity: ability to hold together while it’s being shaped.
Fire - Heating pottery or clay sculptures to a temperature high enough to render it
hard and durable.
Pinch method - Technique that involves squeezing the clay, usually between
thumb and fingers.
Pottery - Functional ware, such as vases, pots, bowls, or plates

Pottery is an ancient art form and in Ilocos this tradition of molding


unglazed earthen called clay. It was originally used to age vinegar, wine &
“bagoong” or fish paste. Pinch Pot is a kind of pottery in which do not use a
machine it is a handmade art by which uses a hand especially the palm and
fingers to pinch the molded clay to create a shape. It is known to be the
traditional way of pottery making.

In Vigan, the clay is kneaded by a carabao before it goes to the


potter’s wheel that is today still spun by foot. It is then shaped into jars,
dried & fired in a kiln. These fragile pieces of art combine the elements of
earth, water, wind & fire that only expert “agdamdamili” or potter can only
achieve.

Pottery had existed long before Spain came to Ilocos. But it was only
in the late 1920s when Chinese migrants like the forefathers of Fidel Go
commercially produced it. Because of the lesser demands in the Chinese
market, they introduced a highly modernized designs of ceramics which they
globally classified by the imperial court. Most of their designs are made
exclusively or mainly for special uses, such as burial in tombs or for use on
altars. From a very simple hand-built coil pots, they introduced the use of
complex glazes and firing methods. These methods are adopted by the east
Asian countries as well as the European countries. Which continue to
flourish until the present. They only differ on the designs and the materials
used but the process is still the same.

By patronizing their art & making it popular again, we can help even as
tourists in continuing the stories of these time-honored handiworks. The
support that we give to them will go a long way in bringing a new breed of
weavers & potters. Because it is in the loss of demand that weakens the
industry, dampens the hearts of our artists & eventually kills this precious
traditional Ilocano handicraft.

Now that you have the idea of what pottery and pinch pot, I want you to
watch these videos of a traditional and modern pottery making which will connect
you to the process and procedures of making pinch pot. Afterwards, compare and
list down the similarities and differences of what is/are on the videos being
presented then answer the guide questions.

Activity 2: Pinch Me!


Make your own pinch pot using clay or any available material that you can
use in pottery making. Think and draft the design of what you are going to do.
Materials:

• Clay
• Styling Tools (pencil)
• Watercolor Paint
• Paint brush
• Small containers of water

Procedures:
1. Form the clay into round ball.

2. Using your thumb, push it in the center.

3. Rotate it at the center and continue pinching the clay until you get the desired
shape.

4. Move your thumb and four fingers slowly around the clay ball. While you are
doing this, you should be applying a small amount of pressure.

5. Start designing your pinch pot using the tip of the pencil. You can use the tattoo
designs of Kalinga or the different patterns in Ilocos and Cordillera Province
textile as inspiration.

You are almost there! Now, that you have learned from our lesson in this
module and created your own pinch pot. In a short bond paper, paste a picture of
