ABSTRACT

A table mat is a mat used to cover table during a meal. It also protects the table from scratches
and stains.
Protect dinner table from watermarks, food stains or heat damage. They also serve as a
decoration.
I chose to do this project because I wanted to find out the process involved in making a table mat,
to acquire skills and to identify different uses of a table mat.
The methods used in gathering information include;
Observation. I visited different workshops observing how the workers do their job.
After doing the research, I found out how a table mat is made, how it is maintained and its uses
The table mats are becoming more commonly used day by day due to their good looking
appearance which makes one to use them in various functions at home or in a catering
establishment.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The project involves making of table mat. Table mat is a covering or pad designating on
individual place setting, unlike the larger table cloth that covers the entire surface. Table mats are
made from different materials, depending on their purpose to protect, decorate, entertain or
advertise. Table mats are used to protect the surface of a table against heat, water and moisture.
They can be used both in homes and restaurants.

1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

In earlier times, table mats were used to provide a protection for expensive furnitures. As time
progressed, the styles and makes of table mat changed. From the cloth style of the early 1900s to
the creation of beads to augment, the cotton ones.

1.2 OBJECTIVES
1.2.1 MAIN OBJECTIVES
The main objective is to make a table mat.

1.2.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

1] To determine the cost of making a table mat.
2] To find out skills involved in making a table mat.
3] To identify the uses of a table mat.
4] To identify the materials used in making a table mat.
5] To find out care and maintenance of a table mat.
6] To find out the process of making a table mat.

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The research would give different restaurants and hotels the idea of using table mats which
makes their dining tables more attractive and beautiful hence attracting more customers.
The project will help me find self-fulfillment and gain knowledge and skills in this study. This
study will help inspire more researchers to be more creative and innovative in their future.

1.4 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The purpose for this study is to make a table mat and to acquire skills.
The study will take two months to complete.
CHAPTER TWO

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 INTRODUCTION
Table mats made from linen are highly absorbent making them unsustainable. I chose beaded
table mat because I wanted a formal look.
Reasons why I chose beaded table mat;
 Beaded table mats set the tone for the meal.
 Keep it clean; after every guest leaves your establishment, everything on the table
including the table mats is removed and replenished. This keeps the tables clean from
bacteria.
 Interested in your brand; creating an elegant table setting, a quieter dining experience and
having environmental consciousness are all part of the brand.
 People eat with their eyes first; people's experience at your restaurant begin with what
they see
CHAPTER THREE
3.0 METHODOLOGY
The methods used include;
I] OBSERVATION
This is mainly by use of sight. One is able to observe how table mat are made gets an idea
instead of asking around.

ii]INTERVIEWER
The researcher visited a beads shop enterprise along Marikiti highway where different beads
sizes and colours are found. Observed and interviewed on the ways of obtaining beads and other
materials required for achieving the goal of the project.

iii] WEBSITE USED

The researcher did a lot of research on the internet to acquire knowledge on how different
cultures across Africa were making items using beads.

IV] QUESTIONAIRE
The use of questions to get another people’s way of making a table mat. This enables one to get
information about the making of a table mat.
3.1 PROCEDURE FOR MAKING
2.4 PROCEDURE OF MAKING A TABLE MAT
1] Buying the materials from the shop
2] Measure the size of the string required for making a table mat using a tape measure and cut the
string using a razor blade.
3] Sort out the beads into sections of the same colour.
4] Join the beads together using a string and a needle.
5] Repeat the procedure.

6] Final product.

3.2 UTILITY OF THE TABLE MAT

Table mat is used to protect the dinner table from water marks, food stains or heat damage.
They also serve as a decoration. They are also used to complete a table set up.
 A table mat is used to cover a dining table.
 Used to complete a table setup
 Serve as a decoration
 Protect table from water marks, food stains or heat damage
 Table mat is a powerful aspect of decor, catches the eyes of people.
3.3 CARE AND MAINTAINANCE
1.] They should be sorted in a lockable shelves or cupboards.
2] They should be cleaned after use to avoid the staining of food particles in within the beads.
3] They should be used for the correct purpose.

4.0 FINDINGS
The researcher found out the following after carrying out the project;
