Shaykh Ahmad Tijani : Comprehensive Advice

A letter Shaykh Tijani wrote to counsel all his students and muqaddams on how to behave throughout life

In the name of Allah, the Most Widely and ‫ﺒﺴم اﷲ اﻟرﺤﻤن اﻟرﺤﯿم وﺼﻠﻰ اﷲ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺴﯿدﻨﺎ‬
Most Deeply Merciful. May Allah send salah and
salam upon Sayyiduna Muhammad, his family, and ‫ﻤﺤﻤد وآﻟﻪ وﺼﺤﺒﻪ وﺴﻠم ﺒﻌد ﺤﻤد اﷲ ﺠل ﺜﻨﺎؤﻩ‬
his companions, after the praise of Allah, Whose
praise is mighty and Whose attributes and names ‫ ﯿﺼل ﻫذا اﻟﻛﺘﺎب إﻟﻰ ﻛﺎﻓﺔ‬.‫وﺘﻘدﺴت ﺼﻔﺎﺘﻪ وأﺴﻤﺎؤﻩ‬

lordly decrees that constrict the nafs. The slaves
find no refuge from such matters. It is not possible ‫واﻷﻗدار اﻟرﺒﺎﻨﯿﺔ ﻤﻤﺎ ﺘﻀﯿق ﺒﻪ اﻟﻨﻔوس ﻤن أﺠل اﻟﺒﻼء‬
for a slave to be in constant relief from all affliction ‫ وﻻ إﻤﻛﺎن‬.‫واﻟﺒؤس؛ وﻟم ﯿﺠد اﻟﻌﺒﺎد ﻤﺼرﻓﺎ ﻋن ﻫذا‬
in this world; rather, the intelligent one should
know that the different states of this world are ‫ﻟﻠﻌﺒد ﻤن اﻟﺘﻤﻛن ﻤن دوام اﻟراﺤﺔ ﻤن ﻛل ﺒﻼء ﻓﻲ‬
constantly following one another in succession,
between moments of constriction and expansion, ‫ ﺒل ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻌﺎﻗل أن ﯿﻌﻠم أن أﺤوال اﻟدﻨﯿﺎ أﺒدا‬,‫اﻟدﻨﯿﺎ‬
good and evil, relief and grief. No inhabitant of ‫ﻤﺘﻌﺎﻗﺒﺔ ﺒﯿن ﺴﺎﻋﺎت اﻨﻘﺒﺎض واﻨﺒﺴﺎط وﺨﯿرات وﺸرور‬
this world can be free from this. So if an affliction
descends or a hardship become heavy, they should ‫ ﻻ ﯿﺨرج أﺤد ﻤﻤن ﺴﻛن اﻟدﻨﯿﺎ ﻋن‬,‫وأﻓراح وأﺤزان‬
know that there is a time at which it will end, to be
followed by relief and happiness. Whoever under-

stands from Allah that this is how their material ‫ ﻓﺈن ﻤن‬.‫أن ﻟﻬﺎ وﻗﺘﺎ ﺘﻨﺘﻬﻲ إﻟﯿﻪ ﯿﻌﻘﺒﻬﺎ اﻟﻔرح واﻟﺴرور‬
life goes will meet every affliction patiently, satis-
fied with the divine decree, and completely grateful ‫ﻋﻘل ﻫذا ﻋن اﷲ ﻓﻲ ﺘﺼﺎرﯿف دﻨﯿﺎﻩ ﺘﻠﻘّﻰ ﻛل ﻤﺼﯿﺒﺔ‬
for all blessings.
Peace, Allah’s mercy, and His blessings be
