Global Citizenship Lesson Plan

Focus: Global Title: What would you do?


Citizenship

Grade: 3 Objectives:
1. Students will explore the meaning of global citizenship and
their responsibilities as global citizens.
2. Students will examine their own values and how they affect the
global community as a whole.

Materials, Supplies: Dilemma Scenarios Discussion Sheets


Graphic Organizer

Engage/Introduction:
● Share a recent dilemma that you have encountered as a teacher, such as having
technical issues with the smartboard. Ask students what they would have done in
your position. Discuss possible solutions for your theoretical dilemma.
● Tell students that everyday we come across problems to solve. Many problems are
small, such as figuring out what to wear when a favorite shirt is dirty. However,
others can be large, such as finding a way to get to school if we miss the bus.
Explain that we often need help in solving problems. We might ask someone we
know or think about how others have solved similar problems. Ask students to
discuss with a partner ways they have solved a simple problem in their daily lives,
or ways they have seen others solve similar problems. Ask 2-3 students to share
with the class.

Explore:
1. Place students in small groups. Provide each group with a list of challenges they
might face during an average day. Model the process of reading a scenario aloud
and discussing potential plans of action as a group. Read the following scenario to
the class:

You are playing on the playground when you notice a classmate throw her
snack wrapper on the ground, instead of into the trash can. What would you
do in this situation?

Explain that this student was not acting as a responsible school citizen. Explain
that a responsible school citizen is someone who follows rules and makes good
choices.This student did not think about how littering would effect others who
attend and work at her school. Ask students to consider what her school would be
like if all students were careless about waste disposal.

2. Next, pass out the global dilemma scenarios. Again, model the process of reading
a scenario aloud and discussing potential plans of action as a group. Read the
following scenario to the class:
You learn from the news that your community is in need of warm coats for
the winter. What would you do in this situation?

Ask students to discuss how we might work together as a community to ensure


that as many people as possible in our community keep warm during the winter
season. Bring up the idea of a clothing drive if not brought up by a student. Discuss
how we are behaving as good global citizens when we work together to solve
larger world problems.

Assessment:
● As a group, have students choose one of the suggested global dilemmas and
complete a graphic organizer describing possible solutions.
