Topic: Tests of Hypothesis

Learning Outcome: To complete the nine steps in hypothesis testing.

A. Accidents in big cities are often attributed to road designs. One can easily deduce that wider
roads lead to vehicular accidents because cars tend to Overspeed on these kinds of roads.
Suppose the number of accidents is recorded in five different places where roads are wider than
usual and the following data is available for analysis. p-value =0.03

Road width (in feet) 150 104 120 66 84

No. of road accidents 40 84 55 92 90

Compute the R-value and complete the 9 steps in hypothesis testing using the problem
above!

1. Problem Statement:
Is there a significant relationship between road width (in feet) and no. of road accidents?
2. Hypotheses
Ho: There is no significant relationship between road width (in feet) and no. of road
accidents.
Ha: There is a significant relationship between road width (in feet) and no. of road
accidents.
3. Choice of Test Statistics
α: Spearman rho (rank correlation) α=0.05

4. Computation
rho-value = -0.945
p-value = 0.055
5. Decision Rule, Level of significance, Findings
Decision Rule: Reject Ho if p-value < (α) level of significance
Findings: p-value (0.055) > α (0.05)
6. Decision
Do not reject the null hypothesis
7. Interpretation
There is no significant relationship between road width (in feet) and no. of vehicle accidents.
Roads with wide widths may not signify or lead to vehicular accidents just because cars tend
to over-speed on these kinds of roads. It matters to the person who drove the vehicle if
she/he handles extra care while driving.
8. Conclusion
Road with wide width may conclude a safe way to drive since there is enough space
and make you don’t have to hustle. Wider roads do not mean that those who drive
any type of certain vehicle can overspeeding.
9. Implication
Wider roads accommodate the increased density of traffic. Thus, it helps those
working individuals who underwent vehicle transportation so that they may not
arrive late in their workplace since there is no heavier traffic.
