Choose one of the primary sources, and answer the questions at levels one and two in “how to
read a primary source” (no need to answer level-3 questions). Your answer should be 100 to 250
words.

I choose Narratives of Incas. Juan de Betanzos wrote this book which recorded the stories and oral
history of his wife’s family. Due to his identity as a Spanish conquistador, Betanzos might want to
indicate some political situation of Incas to people in Spain. As a result, Spanish or other people in
Europe could get a glance of Inca Empire. The excerpt depicted that Huayna Capac conquered
some Indianans and returned back to Quito and how he chose the successor before he died. In my
opinion, Betanzos wanted to convey that the method of choosing a new king in Inca Empire was a
little absurd through the unsuccessful naming by Huayna Capac. The reason that he wrote the
story might be to show the succession of Incan Empire to people who are unfamiliar with the
system. This is a document writing with a little attitude like Huayna Capac was kind because he
might take care of weak people.
