INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS RECITATION?

• Recitation, or reading with the rules of Tajweed, is reading the Quran in the way it was
revealed to the Prophet (s)

• Completion of Quran Revolution Level 1 course, or a basic ability to read Quran

COURSE MATERIALS

• 15-line hard copy Mus-haf (Uthmani script is preferred)

• Notebook or paper, writing implements
• A mirror (to see your mouth as you pronounce letters/sounds)
• Recording device to record/hear yourself recite

• Pronounce all the Quranic Arabic letters sounds from their correct places of
pronunciation
• Apply all the accent marks correctly
• Gain speed and fluency in reading with correct pronunciation

Level 2 Course Notes Page 2

CHAPTER 1: PHONETICS
AWESOME AND HAPPY

There are 29 letters in the Arabic alphabet:

‫ر‬ ‫ذ‬ ‫د‬ ‫خ‬ ‫ح‬ ‫ج‬ ‫ث‬ ‫ت‬ ‫ب‬ ‫ا‬

‫ف‬ ‫غ‬ ‫ع‬ ‫ظ‬ ‫ط‬ ‫ص ض‬ ‫ش‬ ‫س‬ ‫ز‬

‫ي‬ ‫ء‬ ‫ه‬ ‫و‬ ‫ن‬ ‫م‬ ‫ل‬ ‫ك‬ ‫ق‬

Awesome Letters
These seven letters are always Awesome (or heavy):

‫خ غ ق ص ض ط ظ‬

Happy Letters
All the remaining letters are Happy (or light).

Exceptions
These two letters are exceptions because they are sometimes Awesome and sometimes Happy:

‫ ل‬and ‫ر‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 3

PLACES OF PRONUNCIATION

ََ
Where a letter lives, or its address, is called ‫ارِج‬

The places of pronunciation for all 29 letters fit between the first part of the throat and the
nasal cavity.

HERE

AND HERE

Level 2 Course Notes Page 4

Where Does It Live: Throat

The throat letters are: ‫ع ح ا ء ه غ خ‬

3rd
Closest to your mouth ‫غ خ‬

2nd
Middle ‫ع ح‬

1st
Bottom, closest to the chest cavity ‫ا ء ه‬

Where Does It Live: Uvula

Behind the Uvula: ‫ق‬

In Front of the Uvula: ‫ك‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 5

Where Does It Live: Lips

The lip letters are: ‫ب و م ف‬

• Note: If your lips are allowed to touch while pronouncing these letters, then by
definition they cannot touch when pronouncing other letters.

• For example, it is a common mistake for people to allow their lips to touch when saying:

‫صضط‬

Where Does It Live: Front Two Teeth, Edge of Top Teeth

Examine the three parts of the tongue. This will help you use the following places of
pronunciation correctly.

Front Top Two Teeth:

The tip of the tongue (labeled 1), placed behind the top two teeth: ‫تد‬
2nd part of the tongue, behind the top two teeth: ‫ط‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 6

Edges of Front Top Two Teeth:

The tip of the tongue, at the edge of the top teeth: ‫ثذ‬

2nd part of the tongue, at the edge of top teeth: ‫ظ‬

Where Does It Live: Bottom Teeth, Dawd

Behind the Bottom Teeth

Bring the top and bottom teeth together, and tongue vibrates behind bottom teeth: ‫ز‬
The tip of the tongue, behind the bottom teeth: ‫س‬
2nd part of the tongue, behind the bottom teeth (be sure your tongue is not bending): ‫ص‬

Dawd

3rd part of the tongue against right or left top molar without moving the tip of the tongue: ‫ض‬

EXCEPTIONS TO AWESOME AND HAPPY

These two letters are exceptions: ‫ ل‬and ‫ر‬

• The letter‫ ر‬is sometimes Awesome and sometimes Happy.
َّ
• Only in the word ‫ ٱ‬the ‫ ل‬is sometimes Awesome and sometimes Happy.

Otherwise, ‫ ل‬is a Happy letter.

The Rules for ‫ل‬
‫ ل‬is always Happy, except:
َّ
• The only word in which ‫ ل‬can be Awesome is the word ‫ٱ‬
َّ
• ‫ ل‬is Awesome only if the last letter before the word ‫ ٱ‬has a Fat-hah ◌َ or
Dammah ◌ُ
َّ
Identify whether the ‫ ل‬in the word ‫ ٱ‬is Awesome or Happy in each case:

َّ َ َّ َّ ُ ْ َ
ِ‫يل ٱ‬
ِ ِ ‫ب‬ ‫س‬ ِ‫ِين ٱ‬
ِ ‫د‬ ِ‫ ٱ‬ ‫ن‬

ُ‫وق َدة‬ َّ َ َ ْ َ
‫بِأن‬ ‫نار ٱِ ٱلم‬ ِ‫ت ٱ‬ ‫ر‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 8

The Rules for ‫ر‬
‫ ر‬is sometimes Awesome and sometimes Happy.
• ‫ ر‬is Awesome when it carries a Fat-hah ◌َ or Dammah ◌ُ or when it carries a Sukoon
◌ْ and is preceded by a Fat-hah ◌َ or a Dammah ◌ُ
• ‫ ر‬is Happy when it carries a Kasrah ◌ِ or when it carries a Sukoon ◌ْ and is preceded
by a Kasrah ◌ِ
Identify whether each ‫ ر‬is Awesome or Happy:

َْ َ َ ْ ‫َر‬
ُ
‫رِزقه ۥ‬ ‫ف ِْر َع ْون‬ ‫ ُت ُه ۥ‬

ً ْ ُ َٰ َ ْ ُ ْ َ َ ُ َْْ
‫ت عرفا‬ ِ ‫وٱلمرس‬ ‫بِٰ ِد ٍر‬ ‫ٱرض‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 9

TRANSITIONS

Transitions is moving from one place of pronunciation to another, or from the address of one
letter to the address of another letter. Transitions can be from Awesome to Happy, and from
Happy to Awesome.

• Each letter carries its own identity (Awesome or Happy)

• Be careful not to carry over the Awesome or Happy sound as you transition from one
place of pronunciation to another

Practice moving from Awesome to Happy, and from Happy to Awesome, with the following
sounds:

Level 2 Course Notes Page 10

CHAPTER 2 : ACCENTS
Accents embellish and elongate the sounds of letters. When discussing letters, there are two
components:

• The sound the letter makes

• The complete sound: the sound the letter makes added to the Accent on it (i.e., the
sound of the letter ‫ ر‬+ an Accent = a complete sound
BASIC ACCENTS

Cat Feels Cool, or the Basic Accents: ◌َ (Fat-hah) ◌ِ (Kasrah) ◌ُ (Dammah)

Each of the Basic Accents is stretched for 1 count which is equivalent to 1 second.

• The Arabic term for this is ‫حرة‬

• Be careful not to stretch the Basic Accents longer than 1 count
• Pronounce these vowel sounds clearly and evenly

Note: the Basic Accent sounds also can be part of the Double Accents:◌ً ◌ٍ ◌ٌ
Pronounce the vowel portion of the sound clearly and fully before adding the “N” ending.

Read the following words, enunciating each Accent fully and clearly. Remember to also apply
what you know about Awesome and Happy letters.

َ ُ
‫ق ِرئ‬
َ َ

THE BASIC STRETCH

The Basic Stretch is stretched for 2 counts which is equivalent to 2 seconds.

• Give the Basic Stretch its full time

• 2 ‫ حرت‬means it will sound longer than the Basic Accents

All of the below will be stretched for 2 counts:

‫َ◌ ﺍ‬ ‫ِ◌ ي‬ ‫ُ◌ و‬

Fat-hah followed by ‫ا‬ Kasrah followed by ‫ي‬ Dammah followed by ‫و‬

CANADIAN RULE

When a Fat-hah ◌َ is followed by ‫ ي‬with a Sukoon ◌ْ it will sound similar to the name of the
letter “A”.

(Remember to follow the rules of Awesome and Happy in combination with this rule.)

َْ َْ
 َْ ْ‫اَى‬ َْ َْ

AROUND THE WORLD

When a Fat-hah ◌َ is followed by ‫ و‬with Sukoon ◌ْ the sound goes around the world. It will
sound similar to the name of the letter “O”.

(Remember to follow the rules of Awesome and Happy in combination with this rule.)

ْ‫قَو‬ ‫َع ْو‬ ْ‫َخو‬ ْ‫اَو‬ ْ‫نَو‬ ْ‫لَو‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 13

RULES OF ELONGATION

The rules of elongation help us understand how long to stretch a complete sound as well as
how much not to stretch.

• Basic Accents are stretched for 1 count

• Basic Stretch is stretched for 2 counts
• It is just as important not to stretch as it is to do so when necessary

NORTH TO SOUTH AND EAST TO WEST

All the signs of elongation fit in one of two categories:

1. North to South
OR
2. East to West

North to South

The following signs of elongation all point North to South: ٰ ‫ۥ ۦ‬

These are all stretched for two counts ‫حرت‬

ٰ
‫ى‬ ٰ‫لَـ‬ ‫ٰو‬ ‫َع ٰـ‬

‫ُوۥ‬ ُ
‫ـهۥ‬ ۧ‫يِٮـ‬ ‫ـهِۦ‬

ُ َ َ َ ٰ ٰ ‫ُم ْو‬
‫د ُاوۥد‬ ‫نب ِ ّيِــ َۧن‬ ‫ذل ِك‬

Level 2 Course Notes Page 14

East to West

The following sign runs from East to West ٓ

• It is stretched for 4-6 counts ‫حرت‬
ْ‫يَ َرهُ ٓۥ أَ َحد‬ َ‫قُ ْل يَـٰٓ َ ُّها‬ ْ‫َو َ َْ ُتم‬ ُ َ َ

Miracle Letters

Letters of which only Allah SWT knows the meaning

● They come only at the beginning of a Surah

ٓ
● Example: ‫ن‬

● The Rule: hold the stretch for approximately 6 counts ‫حرت‬

How do you know if it should be stretched for 4 or 6 counts?
َّ َ
● An East to West followed by a ‫ ء‬will be stretched for approximately 4 counts: ‫مشآء‬

ٓ
● An East to West on a Miracle letter will be stretched for approximately 6 counts: ‫ق‬

● If the East to West stretch is followed by a Shaddah ◌ّ will be stretched for

ُ َّ َّ
approximately 6 counts: ‫الصآخة‬

THE FISH HEAD

‫ٱ‬
The Fish Head Accent is found in any Uthmani script Mus-haf and it is called the Head of ‫ص‬
• It does look like a fish head!

• ‫ا‬
When you see this symbol on Alif you do not pronounce the letter, which means that

‫ا‬
you cancel the letter Alif .

• The exception to this rule is if you are starting with a word that has a Fish Head Accent

‫ٱ‬. For example, you are starting the verse on this kind of word.
Practice reading the following phrases with the Fish Head Accent on Alif ‫ ٱ‬and notice how the
letter is canceled:

َ َۡ ّ َ ۡ ۡ ّ َ ّ ‫ب َر‬
‫ب ٱلفل ِق‬
ِ ‫بِر‬ ‫اس‬ َ َ

CHAPTER 3: SIGNS FOR STOPPING
Knowing When To Stop

These are the signs for stopping that you will see in your Mus-haf. Different scripts of the Quran
will have some signs that are slightly different.

ۛۛ
If you stop on one, don’t stop on the other.

ۙ
Don’t stop.

ۘ
Must stop.

ۗ
Better to stop but joining is acceptable.

CONNECT (SUKOON) ◌ْ
You must connect the complete sound of the previous letter with the sound of the letter that
has the Connect (Sukoon) ◌ْ Accent.
A few examples for review:

ْ‫م‬ َ ُُْ َ ُ‫َۡ َعلْه‬
‫أمثال‬ ‫تفرون‬

CONNECT & HOLD (SHADDAH) ◌ّ

the Accent that comes directly before it.
