BRAZIL The Brazilian infrastructure
construction segment recorded strong
growth of 10.2% in 2021 but growth will
slow to 3.8% in 2022 due to rising prices
of materials and their lack of availability, as
well as elevated interest rates, according
to a report from GlobalData.
The report predicts that growth will
decline further in 2023 to 1.4% as the rising
costs and lack of availability of materials
causes significant delays and cost hikes.

Bay View Campus in California, US,
which the company says will operate
entirely on carbon-free energy by 2030.
The campus is designed by BIG-Bjarke
Ingels Group and Heatherwick Studios in
collaboration with Google.
The dragon scale solar skin draped across the
canopy of the campus is equipped with 50,000
silver solar panels that create the capacity for
seven megawatts of power per hour – around
40% of the building’s total energy needs.
The site also integrates the most extensive
geothermal pile system in North America and
is net-water positive.
“Working with a client as data-driven as
Google has led to an architecture where every
single decision is informed by hard information
and empirical analysis,” said Bjarke Ingels,
founder, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group.
“The result is a campus where the dragon

hits the buildings; the energy piles store and
extract heating and cooling from the ground.” iC

rom bridges to coastal high-rises that

The construction industry generates over
AUD$60 billion (US$43 billion) in revenue,
producing around 9% of Australia’s Gross
Domestic Product (GDP), and has a projected
annual growth rate of 2.4% in the next five
years, according to the Australian Industry and

As the threat of inflation looms across the
industry, Australia’s economy must deal with
further challenges, including the growing cost

the Elizabeth Line, has opened to the public.
Formerly known as Crossrail, the new railway
will reduce journey times and transform
accessibility in London and the South East.
When fully open, the Elizabeth line will
increase central London’s rail capacity by 10%.
The final cost is estimated to be £19 billion
(US$23.7 billion), significantly higher than
the £14.8 billion (US$18.5 billion) it was
originally budgeted at.
The railway stretches over 100km through
central London from Shenfield and Abbey
Wood in the east to Reading and Heathrow
in the west, stopping at 42 stations (10 newly
built and 31 upgraded) and is expected to serve
around 200 million people each year.
Construction on the Elizabeth Line began in
2009. As well as new tunnels, old tunnels were
reused like the Connaught tunnel – a disused
rail link in Docklands that was built in 1878 –
which was strengthened and widened. iC
