Social Studies: Create a Flag

Student Objectives:
Students will be able to:
● Use prior knowledge about California history to create a new flag that represents the
state
● Create a flag with new colors and symbols that represent California
● Present their flag to the class to showcase their new flag

Subject/Grade Level:
Social Studies, 4th Grade

Materials:
● Directions for project
● Markers, colored pencils, or crayons
● Pencils
● Paper
● Construction paper
● Chromebook (for research)
● Social Studies workbook

Previous Lessons Taught


● Prior to the project being assigned students will have completed the following lessons:
○ Expanding Rights and Political Change
○ California's Economy
○ Immigration and Trade
○ Education
● These lessons will take about 4 weeks to complete.
● Each lesson students will understand vocabulary words and answer comprehension
questions.

Create a Flag Lesson


Day 1:
● Teacher will distribute the directions for the project.
● Teacher will go over the instructions for the project.
● Teachers will ask if students have any questions about the project.
● Teacher will give students class time to work on the project.

Day 2:
● Students will continue working on the project.

Day 3:
● Students will explain their flag - the symbols they picked and the colors they picked for it.
● The students will be graded based on the directions/rubric that was handed out.
Differentiated Instruction
Student(s) with an IEP, 504
● Provide all accommodations listed in IEP or 504
● Pair student with a partner or have IA help
● Give student the project in small steps
● Provide more opportunities for oral work, instead of written, if needed

GATE Student(s)
● Encourage students to dive deeper into the project
● Provide extra resources for them to research online
● If finished early, they can assist others, if they want

English Language Learners


● Work with teacher or another students for extra support on writing/reading
● Provide extra time
● Allow the students to use more visual
● Give student modified directions, if needed
