Question 1: What does EI stand for? Explain what EI is. What is the maximum threshold for
2023? What % of EI will recipients receive under the threshold? Is it gross or net? Provide a
specific example of when someone would apply for EI.

Answer: Employment Insurance. It is a mandatory government-sponsored plan for all employed


Canadians that provides workers with temporary income replacement as a result of. Employment
interruptions due to circumstances beyond their control.
The threshold for 2023 is 55% gross.
Example: When someone stopped working because of the seasonal or mass layoffs or due to

Question 2: How many weeks could someone get on medical EI?

Answer: 26 weeks (Canada.ca, EI regular benefits)

Question 3: What does WCB stand for? Explain what WCB is. What % of earnings does WCB
pay? Net or gross? Provide a specific example of when someone would apply for WCB.

Answer: Worker’s Compensation Board. It is a mandatory, government-sponsored, employer-


paid no-fault insurance plan that provides compensation for injuries and diseases that arise out
of, and while in the course of, employment. It pays 75% to 90% of Net.
Example: loss of earnings due to temporary/ permanent disability.

Question 4: When an employee chooses to end their employment (quit), what two things does
the employee need to do? List them.

Answer: The employee must provide written notice to the employer as per the length of their

Question 5: Joey was employed with Barbie Gril Inc. for 9 months. His boss, Olga, wants to
end his employment without cause. How much termination pay does Olga have to give Joey

Answer: 1 week. He must pay Olga 3 days’ pay.

Question 6: Frank has been employed with company A for 6 months. Frank found a new job and
gave Company A one-week written notice of decision and last day. The employee has worked
two days of their notice period. The employer wants to expedite the termination, what does the
employer need to do?

Answer: The employer has to pay him for 3 days extra other then the days he has worked for.

Question 7: Explain what Personal and family responsibility leave is. What is the employee
eligibility?
Answer: It is leave granted to an employee after they complete their 90 days of the work with the
same employer to meet his or her family responsibilities in relation to a family member.

Question 8: Bob was employed with company A since September 1, 1983. Company B bought
Company A on January 5, 2023. All employees continued to work for Company B. On January
23, 2023, Company B decided to terminate Bob without cause. How much notice/termination
pay is company B required to give Bob?

Answer: The employee is qualifying when he worked for the same employer for at least 30
workdays in the 12 months prior to the holiday.

Answer: Yes, if required by law, such as federal and provincial tax, contribution to Canada
Pension Plan, employment Insurance Premiums, or a garnishee of the court.

Question 14: Arshpreet gets paid $20/hr. He is working an 8-hour shift. How many breaks is he
legally entitled to? Paid or unpaid?

Question 15: What is compassionate care? What is the eligibility? What is the length of leave?
Does the employee’s family member have to live in AB?

Answer: The compassionate care leave is granted when the family member of the employee is
gravely ill. Employee is eligible when they have been employed at least 90 days with the same
employer. And their family member is at significant risk of dying within 26 weeks, as
established by a medical certificate. The length is 27 weeks. No, they can be in Alberta or

Question 16: Explain what is outsourcing.

Answer: Outsourcing is a common cost containment strategy- hiring vendors to administer the
benefit program.

Question 17: Explain vacation pay as per Employment Standards. What percentage is given to
workers for 2 weeks and 3 weeks.

Answer: Employers must provide an annual vacation to most employees based on length of
service to make sure they can rest from work without loss of income.

Answer: Relational return are the psychological. Example: recognition and status, employment
security, challenging work and learning opportunities.

Question 19: Explain what bereavement is?

Answer: Bereavement leave can be taken after the death of an immediate or extended family.

Answer: It is a summon from the government of Canada to show in the court.


Question 21: Look at Exhibit 1.3. Explain the following:
-Extended Health: It includes the ambulance, massage costs
-Dental- cover the dentist visits
-Short-term disability- Injuries caused outside the work
-Long-term disability- it is started when short- term disability is finished or EI
 Life Insurance: Life insurance can assist your loved ones in dealing with the
financial implications of your death. A life insurance policy's death benefit is a
tax-free lump sum payment that can be used to ensure that your family's standard
of living is maintained, replace your income, provide for your dependents, pay for
funeral expenses, and pay off your debts, make a voluntary contribution and
additionally, you have the option of leaving the funds in a trust or your estate.

 Pension: A pension is a fund from which payments are made to assist a person's
retirement from work in the form of recurring payments. A pension may be a
"defined benefit plan," where a fixed amount is paid to a person on a regular
basis, or a "defined contribution plan," where a fixed amount is invested and

 Work-Life Programs: Work-life programmers are advantages, regulations, and
initiatives established with the aim of enhancing employees' quality of life by
more effectively balancing and integrating their work and personal lives. Work-
life programmers, for example, frequently provide on-site exercise facilities as
well as the option to work flexible hours. Similar to work-family programmers,
these initiatives are voluntary but were established on the fundamental tenet that
"going the extra mile" to support workers will ultimately benefit the company
