How to use the Voltage

drop calculation file

This manual explains how to use the Voltage drop calculation.xlsm to
correctly design a Smart Dupline® network
During the process of network planning and design, the user has to
evaluate where to place the Smart Dupline® modules and how to
connect them to the Smart Dupline® generator.
 When the installation is completely new, this file helps to place properly all
the modules taking care of distances and bus load
 If a Dupline® network already exists, this file helps to find where the
network has to be adjusted

Please download the file from this page , selecting WEB master unit,
and then downloading the software package by either the
SB2WEB24 or SH2WEB24 pages.
Please refer to system manual.pdf for the technical details regarding
the installations tips.

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 3

In the first sheet called Voltage drop calculation, the user will find a table (as shown in the red
rectangle in the picture below) that corresponds to one Smart Dupline® network (i.e. the
network generated by one SH2MCG24). The first table is the empty one ready to be used, and
the second is the same example used in this Instruction manual. The user can copy and paste
a table, should he need more than one Smart Dupline® network in the same project.

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 4

By means of this file, the user can automatically calculate the bus load of
each Smart Dupline® generator. In each point of the Dupline® network it is
possible to visualize the voltage drop and current consumption.
These steps have to be followed to design the network:
1. Configure the table with all the information about the Dupline® network
installation, such as: the wiring diagram, the number of Smart Dupline®
modules, the length of the cable between all the points and the cable
section.
2. Launch the macro to calculate the bus load and channel consumption

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 5

In the first section, the user can monitor the resources usage of the Smart Dupline® generator
The columns, shown in the blue rectangle, represent the consumption in terms of Dupline® current usage,
Input/Output channels and the power supply needed (W): when one of these resources reaches its
maximum value, the relevant cell changes its color into yellow first (warning) and then into red (overload)
 Modules (max 250):
The number of Smart Dupline® modules present in
your Dupline® network
 Power 24V:
Total consumption of the 24Vdc powered modules
added: this has to be used to select the proper
power supply unit
 Fast Output (max 112):
The number of Dupline® Output channels used
 Fast Input (max 120):
The number of Dupline® Input channels used
 I (mA) (max 350mA):
Total current consumption of the modules added
 In the Locations fields the user can insert the name of the Location, to track where the Smart
Dupline® modules are placed (green rectangle)
 The user must not modify any other cell present in this part of the table, since it will be filled in by
the macro (blue and red rectangles)
How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 6
In this part of the table the user has to configure the wiring diagram of the Smart Dupline® modules:
for each cell, the user has to define the Dupline point type, filling it in with one of the allowed letters,
as indicated in the description below. If a not allowed letter is used, the macro will cancel it.

DEFINITION
 Point (P):
Position of one or more Smart Dupline® modules
connected on the same point, such as a cabinet or a
small room;
 Distributed (D):
Group of Smart Dupline® modules equally distributed
along a section;
 Node (N):
A Node has to be indicated before a branch
 Branch (B):
Each branch from the Smart Dupline® generator
 Amplifier (A):
The amplifier is the SB2REP230 Dupline® repeater

 In the middle of the table, as shown in the blue rectangle, the user has to type in the
length of the cable between two Dupline® point and the cable section.
 Each column represents a branch: a branch is a piece of network out from the smart
Dupline® generator (SH2MCG24).

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 11

 Each row represents the position of one or more modules: the user has to add the right
letter that indicates the type of the connection, the length of the cable between this point
and the one it is connected to (for example in the first row the distance from the
SH2MCG24 has to be added, in the second row the distance from the first row has to be
filled in), the cable section and the type and number of the Smart Dupline modules
present in that point

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 12

 In the modules area of the table, the user can add the Smart Dupline® modules by
clicking on a cell: a drop down list will appear showing all the available modules.

 In the N&B row, the module cells must be left empty

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 13

 Clicking on the cells relevant to the modules, a drop down list will appear:
1. Click on the first empty cell
2. Then click on the arrow button (red box in the picture below): the modules list is shown
3. The user, by moving up or down using the navigation button (green box in the picture below),
has to select the Smart Dupline® module from the list.

 The user can add more modules, by moving along the row line. If the cells in the
template are not enough, simply copy and paste them

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 14

 To configure the modules properties, the user has to double click on the cell of the module
once it is selected:

Mode of operation
The working mode of the module has to be
chosen here

Number of modules
The user can select the number of this type of
module connected here

Details
This box provides the details of the modules in
terms of working mode and resources
consumption (channel, current, needed supply
power).
The configuration can be edited directly in this
text box.

Press the Apply button to save the configuration

To select the mode of operation of the Smart Dupline® dimmer modules, the user can refer
to the Dimmer Interface type table sheet, since according to the scenarios in use, the
channel occupation is different.

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 16

This page explains how to select the Interface type

Dimmer function example

• One push button is used in toggle mode for S1
(Channel 1 is used);
• One push button is used to set Scene S4
(Channel 1 and 2 are used);
• One push button is used to set Scene S5
(Channel 2 and 3 are used);

1 + 1 + 1 = Interface type 3

The Channel columns have to be considered in a logical OR, so if at

least one Channel is used by one working mode (red boxes), that
column has to be calculated as 1. To calculate the dimmer interface
type, the user has to sum all the columns with at least a 1

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 17

Only for the Smart Dupline DALI master, the SB2DALI230 module, the user has to follow a
dedicated procedure:
 Select the SB2DALI230 module from the list;

 In the empty cells close to SB2DALI230, the user has to select as many DALI function as the
number of functions/groups of ballast that the SB2DALI230 is controlling, in order to calculate the
right channel occupation
 For each DALI function, the user has to select the Interface type like a standard dimmer, by double
clicking on the DALI function cell.

 To calculate the total addresses consumption, please add the number of DALI ballasts to the
value calculated by the macro

Output of the macro
In the left part of the table, the data calculated by the macro will be prompted.
The columns, in the red rectangle, represent the consumption in terms of Dupline® current
usage, Input/Output channels and the power supply needed (W): when one of these
resources reaches its maximum value, the relevant cell changes its color into yellow first
(warning) and then into red (overload).

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 25

The user can verify the bus load and the voltage drop at each point of the network by moving
the mouse pointer over the relevant cell (see red rectangle).

N.B. Should the user make any change in the table, the macro has to be launched again

How to use the Voltage drop calculation file 26

An example of a too high voltage drop is shown below.

All the points along the red branch result in an excess of voltage drop: the calculation has been
done according to the cable resistance and the current consumption of the connected modules.

An amplifier (SB2REP230 Dupline repeater) is needed here to boost the current and voltage of
the branch. So an A has to be added: as soon as the macro runs, the colour of the branch will
turn into green again.
The installer now is aware that in this point of the network a repeater SB2REP230 has to
be added.
