CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

In every school experience, there will be different problems in terms of the academic

performance of the students and so, the primary goal of the teachers is to provide appropriate and

effective instructional materials to students to meet the standards set by the Department of

Education in implementing the K to 12 Basic Education Program. Helping students who are

struggling in their subjects require teachers to choose an appropriate strategy and time for

intervention, and without a systematic approach, this can be a challenge for teachers who have

multiple students in need of help (Magno, 2019).

Physical education can provide all students with enjoyable and worthwhile learning

opportunities where they develop the movement skills and competencies to participate and

perform in a variety of physical activities competently, confidently and safely. It builds students’

motivation in and commitment to physical activity and sport within and beyond school. It can

encourage students to get involved in both participation and leadership roles, irrespective of their

previous experiences of or ability in physical activity (Curriculum Online, n.d.). Hence, varied

activities and various instructional materials such as Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM)

would be a great aid for the students in gaining a better understanding of the lessons (Diaz, E.D.,

& Dio, R. V., 2017) specifically for grade 9 students.

According to Bunagan in 2019, Strategic Intervention Material is intended to re-teach

ideas and skills (least learned). It is a resource provided to students to assist them in mastering

competency-based abilities that they were unable to learn during regular classroom instruction. It

includes both student learning methodologies and material improvement (for teachers). It is a

holistic strategy to assist pupils in becoming self-sufficient and effective learners. He

distinguished SIM and modules further. This strategic intervention material emphasizes the

ability that students did not master during class. It does not include a pre-test or a post-test and

incorporates enjoyable activities. Modules, on the other hand, were meant for regular classroom

instruction and remote learning and comprised various themes featured in a specific chapter.

(Rahmawati et al., 2019). Students are interested in their lesson materials because they have

control over their education. It enhances contextual mobility in the academic setting as well as

problems in classroom encounters. (Lomer, & Anthony-Okeke,2019). SIM also improves and

strengthens students' modification, knowledge, or analytical thinking, as well as their

understanding and observation (Togonon, 2021).Several studies were also conducted to

determine the perception of students on the utilization of strategic intervention materials on

different subject area. The content, structure, and use criteria of Strategic Intervention Material

(SIM) in Economics were quite clear. The SIM in general features facilities for improving higher

cognitive abilities; topics/discussions are engaging, intriguing, and intelligible; and intervention

material provides and ensures long-term knowledge if used by students. The students' view of

SIM is also good (Daisy, 2021).Teaching the pupils to do their best is a challenge as it requires

many efforts of intervention and simulation to improve learners’ academic achievement.

Several results of studies proved the effectiveness of the utilization of Strategic

Intervention Material (SIM) on students in teaching and showed a significant difference from

regular classroom teaching or conventional teaching method (Casinillo, L. 2020, Cabello, C. et.

al. 2022, Sinco, M. G. 2020, Arpilleda, A. J. 2021, Abuda, B. F., et.al, 2019, Acera, F. 2022). He

implies that SIM, an instructional material is an effective tool during the learning process for

students. According to Arpilleda, A. J. (2021) Strategic Intervention Material help learners

achieve success in learning and resulted in a positive impact in mastering the least-learned
competency as reflected in the post-test result of two created groups in his study about students’

mathematical performance. In his study, he recommended conducting more training and

programs for teacher to enhance their skills in using SIM for the students.

Students are unique and diverse in learning so the use of SIM for all students would not

fit because of individual differences. However, Acera, F. S. (2022) suggested that teachers must

be creative and patient enough to find ways to master and understand the lessons. The

performance of the learners using Strategic Intervention Materials found out that the learning

approach encourages learners to have creative and in depth understanding within the learning

environment than traditional teaching. The study revealed that both controlled group and

experimental group exposed to SIM achieved better. The use of the strategic intervention

materials will be a big help to the students in order for them to find interest in every designed

activity that teachers introduce to them.

Bitanhuan National High School is one of the high schools in Baybay Division located in

Brgy. Bitanhuan, Baybay City, Leyte. This school is belonging to the public sector, and a

number of students enrolled from Grade 7 to Grade 12. Despite the challenge in academic

performance due to the pandemic, 2 years of lockdown, and eventually the limited face-to-face

approach, it’s going back to the normal system now in the said school. With that, just like in any

other school, as the researchers were having class observations, there were problems and

challenges seen and observed. The researchers agreed to focus on Grade 9 students. As observed

during their assessments and performance in Physical Education subjects, the majority did not

master the concept of ...and resulting in lower performance which are alarming enough. That is

why teaching Physical Education must be student-centered and equipped with a variety of

instructional learning strategies. With the utilization of Strategic Intervention Material (SIM), we
the researchers would want to help the students to have a positive development on mastering the

concept in Sports and to see its effect on their students’ performance.

(SIM) before and after of the controlled and experimental group?

PROPOSED INNOVATION, INTERVENTION, AND STRATEGY

Physical education is an important part of a student’s education because it helps them to

stay healthy and learn teamwork skills. In addition, physical education can help students

maintain a healthy weight and develop lifelong physical activity habits. Schools need to provide

physical education classes so that all students have the opportunity to benefit from these positive

outcomes.

Physical education classes allow students to be active and participate in enjoyable

activities. When students are engaged in physical activity, they are more likely to continue being

physically active throughout their lives. In addition, physical activity has been shown to affect

academic performance positively. One study found that physically active students had better

grades and were more likely to graduate from high school than students who were not physically

active.

Physical education classes can also help students develop teamwork skills. Working

together in team sports can teach students how to cooperate with others and how to resolve

conflicts. These skills are important in all aspects of life, including the workplace. In addition,

participating in physical activity can help students to develop social skills and make friends.

Finally, physical education classes can help students to maintain a healthy weight.

Obesity is a growing problem in the Philippines, and schools must do everything possible to help

students maintain a healthy weight. Physical activity can help students burn calories and build

muscle, which is essential for maintaining a healthy weight.

Thus, it is evident that school physical education classes offer students many benefits.

These classes help students to stay healthy, make friends, develop teamwork skills, and maintain

a healthy weight. All of these factors are important for leading a successful life. Therefore,

schools must provide physical education classes for all students.

Teaching sports in this subject, for example, futsal is a little bit tricky. With that, to point

out the student’s ability to understand and apply the basic skills, teacher-researchers are to take

initiative to use Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) in teaching grade 9 students in Bitanhuan

National High School- one of the problems seen during observation.

SIM has become a supporting material to help students master least-learned subjects or

competencies (Toquero, 2020, as cited by Cabello, 2022). These materials may consist of various

activities and interactive discussions where student can widen their knowledge about the topic

(Arpilleda, A.J. 2021). If a student couldn’t learn in a regular or conventional classroom setting,

this Strategic Intervention Material tool would be of great help (Acua, et al. 2015). Moreover,

this strategy also ensured that the activities to be used will match the tasks and objectives, it

should be brief yet direct to the point, and plenty of activities to practice mastering the said skills

(Bahinting, et al. 2022 as cited by Cabello, 2022).

This action research will seek to delve into the effects of using Strategic Intervention

Material to grade 9 students’ performance in teaching Physical Education at Bitanhuan National

High School. Through the integration of SIM, these are instructional materials meant to release

the concepts and skills to help the learner master the competency based-skill which they were not

able to develop during normal classroom settings. This intervention material has 5 kinds such as

guide cards, activity cards, enrichment cards, and reference cards and answer key card.

Participants in the study during the intervention will expose to these stages- the activity, the
enrichment, and the assessment. They will be given activity cards, drill cards, and PE games. We

can see that teaching the students will not only focus on discussions and the plain board works.

Researchers are seeking to develop various interactive activities that will serve as an intervention

to help them master the lesson.

Intervention/ Action:

 Strategic Intervention Materials must be used by PE teachers in order to promote

effective teaching and learning.

 Let the students explore another ways of learning which can help the students’

performance.

 Encourage teachers to make Strategic Intervention Materials during discussions.

ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

This section shows the procedures and methods that are being applied in the study. It

contains research design and population. The instruments to be used in collecting and gathering

the data are also included as well as the statistical tools for analyzing the data.

A. Participants and/or Other Sources of Data and Information

Research Subject/Participants

This action research entitled Effects on Student Performance through Strategic Intervention

Materials (SIM) in teaching P.E and Health in Grade 9 students of Bitanhuan National High

School will be getting the data from Bitanhuan National High School to grade nine students.

There are 85 Grade 9 Students enrolled in the said school in the S.Y. 2022-2023, they will also

serve as the study’s population. According to Bhattacherjee (2012) as cited in Melegrito and

Mendoza (2016), the population is the group you want to study to. The researchers want to study

the 100% population of the said grade level without using any sampling techniques.

B. Data Gathering Methods

This action research falls under the quasi-experimental method with pre-test and post-test

to carry out this study. The class will group into two groups namely the experimental and the

control group. There will be seeking approval from the principal and grade nine class advisers
before going into the intervention of the study. The researcher will then start the implementation

for five days for the class.

C. Data Analysis Plan

The data gathered in the study will be tabulated, treated, analyzed, and used as the basis

for interpretation. The pre-test and post-test of the Experimental and control group will be

analyzed to test if the participant’s performance improves with and without the aid of SIM

(Strategic Intervention Materials). Statistical procedures and formulas are applied in interpreting

and analyzing the data to come up with a valid conclusion. In the pre-test and post-test, the

student researcher will use the Mean, Standard deviation, Minimum and Maximum value of the

number of participants, and Mean Percentage Score (MPS) as a statistical treatment to process

the data. With the use of a t-test, the implementation of Strategic Intervention Material will be

seen if it is effective or not and to see if there is a significant difference in the mean scores from

the pre-test and post-test of both groups.
