The scene opens with the boys taking a break to eat while they are traveling toward the

mountain.
Ralph, feeling despondent, looks out at the choppy ocean, thinking about how the boys have
become undisciplined and slovenly. To him, the vast expanse of water represents a wall that blocks
their hopes of escaping the island. But Simon lifts Ralph's spirits by assuring him that they will make
it home.

Later that afternoon, the hunters discover pig droppings, and Jack suggests hunting the pig while
searching for the beast. Ralph, who has never been on a hunt before, gets caught up in the
excitement of the chase, and in the heat of the moment, flings his spear at the boar. Although the
boar escapes, the boys remain in a frenzy, reenacting the chase among themselves with a boy
named Robert playing the boar. But the game becomes dangerous, and Robert nearly gets killed
before the boys remember themselves. Ralph tries to remind everyone that they were only playing a
game, but the boys are too stirred up to listen.

As darkness falls, Ralph, Roger, and Jack climb the mountain to hunt the monster. Jack climbs alone
to the summit and returns breathlessly, claiming to have seen the monster. Ralph and Roger climb
up to have a look and see a terrifying specter, a large, shadowy form with the shape of a giant ape.
The boys hurry down the mountain to warn the group.

The next morning, the boys gather on the beach in a state of uproar over the monster. Jack seizes
the conch shell and calls for an assembly, claiming that Ralph is a coward who should be removed
from his leadership role. The other boys refuse to vote Ralph out of power, but Jack storms away,
saying that he is leaving, and anyone who likes is welcome to join him.

Piggy cheers Ralph up with an idea to build a new signal fire on the beach, and the boys set to work.
But many sneak away into the night to join Jack's group. Jack's tribe kills a sow, and Roger drives his
spear into its anus. They leave the sow's head on a stake in the jungle as an offering to the beast.

Meanwhile, Simon awakens and finds the air dark and humid with an approaching storm. He crawls
up the hill and sees the dead pilot with his flapping parachute. Realizing that the boys have mistaken
the harmless object for the deadly beast, Simon stumbles toward Jack's feast to tell the other boys
what he has seen.

At the feast, Jack sits like a king on a throne, his face painted like a savage. After the meal, he invites
Ralph's followers to join his tribe, and most of them accept. Piggy and Ralph try to keep some
control over events, but they are outnumbered, and the scene ends with chaos and uncertainty.
