CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Peterson & Hann (1999), the objective of this research was to investigate
the long-term effects of parenting during adolescence on young adult well-being. A large
amount of research shows that parental practices aimed at controlling and socializing
teenage children impact their developmental outcomes. Parental control techniques that use
physical strength differentials or social standing to coerce desired conduct are referred to as
coercive parental behavior. On the other hand, coercion does not refer to parental firmness,
which may be beneficial to self-esteem, but rather to punishment, which is detrimental to
self-esteem as stated by Coopersmith (1967).

Parental coercion is a form of parental conduct that parents may use to discipline their
children. Coercive parenting is abrupt and unpredictable. Coercive parents are frequently
more concerned with maintaining societal status distinctions than with regulating their
children's behavior. For many parents, one of the most important disciplinary goals is
compliance. Parents shape their children's compliance by teaching them prosocial practices
and imposing appropriate limits. Most students get insecure about their academic
achievement, and as a result, their parents may be disappointed in them if they show the
results indicating that they are not performing well in school. Also, for them to strive harder
and stress themselves out for not achieving well. In the study of Dishion et al. (1994)

The gap that was intended to resolve in this study is, To what degree is children's
aggressive behavior connected across home and school environments?. I’ve seen the
research gaps in some previous studies and I would like to take this study as a way to fill in
that gap. At the end of the study, the researcher foresee’s the study to be resolved and reach
the expected goal of determining how parental coercion affects students by the following
factors that they may encounter or they have encountered. This study provides helpful
benefits to students especially for their parents to be aware of how they could support their
child without having them undergo parental coercion.
