ILLUSTRATES EVENTS, UNION AND INTERSECTION OF

EVENTS A U B=  { M,A,R,B,L,E,I,O,U }

Sets A ∩ B = { A,E }

- are the collections of items and using the bracket { }

Example 3 :
-it may contain numbers, days of the week, or names of friends

{A,B C,D,E}

Elements

-the items contained within a set satisfies the criteria

{1,2,3,4}

Event

-a subset of a sample space.

-a specific or collection of outcomes.

Union

-the blending of both sets (indicates "or")

- special symbol U

Intersection
Given :
-when the two sets overlap (indicates "and")
-special symbol ∩ Event A = { 1,2,3,5,6,9 }
Union of Events Event B = {2,3,4,5,8,7,10}
 -an event is something that has happened and is always associated A U B = {1,2,3,5,6 9,4,5,8,7,10}
with an experiment.
A ∩ B = {2,3,5}
- consists of elements belonging to event A, event B or both A and B.

-this is written as A or B
Example 4 :
  A U B

Intersection of Events

- events are occurring together

- even if one event holds false all will be false

- consists of all elements in event A and B at the same time.

-this is written as A and B

   A ∩ B

Union and Intersection of Events

Example 1 : If Event A is { 1,2,3,4,5 } and Event B is {10,20,30,40,50 }

A U B = { 1,2,3,4,5,10,20,30,40,50 } Given :

A ∩ B= { } or empty space  Event A = {0,1,2,3}

Event B = {8,9,10}
Example 2 : If Event A is letters from the word MARBLE and Event B
all the VOWELS
A U B = { 0,1,2,3,8,9,10}
Given: Event A= { M,A,R,B,L,E }
A ∩ B = { } or empty space
            Event B= { A,E,I,O,U }
