AS-5 Lecture on Unpacking MELCs

Understanding and Maximizing the MELCS

1. What is MELCs?
• Most Essential Learning Competency

2. How is the process of identifying MELCs

• K-12 Curriculum Guide- Essential Learning Competencies-Most Essential Learning
Competencies

3. What is the basis of the MELCs?

• For Enduring competencies
• Learning Competencies that are essentials in many professionals and in everyday
life.

4. What are the general rule in the learning Competencies in MELC?

• Retained-it satisfies the endurance criterion that contributes to life-long
learning. And pre-requisite skill to the next hrade level.
• Merged-combined into one comprehensive learning competency
• Dropped- too specific, recurring and it is subsumed in another LC.
• Rephrased to be concise.

5. Why unpack the standards?

• To make explicit connections between standards and competencies.
• Provide missing competencies.
• Breaks down in explicit terms the coverage, process or skills involved in the
standards or competencies.
• Break down competencies into more digestible parts/teachable parts.
• Identifies the budget of time as suggested by the LC.

6. How do we unpack?
• KUD framework is followed when unpacking the MELCs.
• Check the code to determine the number of weeks.
• Take note of the noun and verbs in the LC,PS and CS.
• Check the content and skills of the main LC need prerequisites skills and sub-
content before the main LC is learned.

7. What to unpack?
• Unpack the content
• Unpack the skills
• Unpack both skill and content

8. What is Constructive alignment?

• It is the alignment of the Curriculum which consist of the Knowledge and skills in
the subject areas that teacher teaches, plus, the Instructions or the activities of
both teachers and students and the assessment of what it intends to measure
of the outcomes.

9. How do we assess?
• Curriculum-Instruction-Assessment. Of the students’ learning.
