CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Dr. Schuyler Skaats Wheeler invented the first electric fan in 1886. It was a two-
bladed, DC desk fan. The fan, made of brass and beloved by all who worked inside during the
summer, was modern, effective, and dangerous because the blades were not enclosed in a
cage. AC motors became more common in the 1890s, eventually supplanting DC motors. In
today's world, electric fans are still a popular way to beat the heat. Portable fans, whether a
personal desk fan or a small battery-powered fan that you can carry with you on hot summer
days, make staying cool simple. However, all of these cooling devices relied on human or
horse-powered fans. A year after Garfield's assassination, Wheeler (1860-1923) discovered
how to use the fledgling science of electricity to turn a fan. Wheeler invented a desktop fan
based on the work of Thomas Edison and Nicola Tesla, consisting of two blades unprotected
by any kind of protective cage and powered by an electric motor. Wheeler rose through the
ranks of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers to prominence (IEEE). In 1901,
he bought J. The Clark Collection was donated to the American IEEE by Latimer Clark, a
British electrical engineer, with the condition that the group provide a suitable building to
house the Clark Collection.
Portable Electric Fans are a type of household appliance that uses a fan blade to rotate
and cut airflow to accelerate air circulation. Because of its small size, convenient charging,
ease of transport, moderate price, and other features, it has become a necessary piece of
equipment for many consumers traveling and at home for cooling and alleviating heat. Apart
from quiet operation, blowing comfort is an important indicator of small fan performance. .
The ideal solution for those who need to cool down quickly. The rapid heat dissipation, large
air volume, and strong wind pressure all indicate comfort. Low wind pressure reflects
comfort for consumers who blow cool for an extended period of time. Other signs include
simulated natural wind. A portable fan is a mechanical device that moves air and creates
airflow for cooling purposes. Fans are commonly used to circulate air in rooms and structures
to provide a more comfortable environment.
Research Gap
This study introduces the cooling-fan efficiency (CFE) index, which is defined as the
ratio of the device's cooling effect (as tested with a thermal manikin) to its power
consumption. In a genuine office, the index was calculated for a ceiling fan, a desk fan, a
standing fan, and a tower fan at three different room air temperatures and fan speed settings.
The results show that the index is sensitive enough to detect changes in cooling device
performance. A standard method for assessing fan cooling impact and a fan efficiency index,
such as the CFE index presented in this work, must be created, according to Wheeler (1886).
This study aims to identify the Effectiveness of a PFLL and a Universal Outlet as an
alternative solution for power outages.
(1) How will the PFLL affects at the students in Iligan City National High School?
(2) What are the effects of a PFLL as an alternative solution for power outages?
(3) Does the students of Iligan City National High School know the effectiveness of a
PFLL that is an alternative solution for the power outages?
The researchers intend to achieve the following goals by conducting this study:
The study was carried out with the intention of assisting us during the dry season. The
researchers all know that our country, the Philippines, has a lot of hot days and power
outages, despite the fact that we only have two seasons: dry and rainy. As a result, as the
researchers, conduct a study to reduce the amount of heat the researchers experience.
Introducing our own portable electric fan with LED lighting, which will be essential in
putting an end to the suffering caused by the hot summer and power loss.
The primary goal of this study is to see if portable electric fans can help students in
Grade 12 at Iligan City National High School with material durability. One of the project's
constraints is the question of whether it will be successful in terms of the number of people
who will benefit from a single product. It comes in handy during power outages, when it's hot
outside, and especially at school nor there’s power outage. We can't live without it because
it's so hot. As a result of this study, their knowledge and research skills will expand and
improve. Heat loss would be improved by increasing the effectiveness of all common heat
loss mechanisms, such as convection and evaporation. They are expected to become more
common in a variety of parts of the world.

The following concepts are operationally or theoretically relevant in the current investigation.
defined:
Hassock Fans - electric fans with a hassock-shaped cylindrical frame that pushes air upward
from the bottom.
Indoor air – A circulation fan frequently mixes the air to maintain a consistent indoor
atmosphere.
Portable Electric Fan – is a corded device that can be moved easily from one location to
another.
Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 3: Methodology
A hybrid energy harvester that uses both triboelectric and electromagnetic methods to
produce electricity from mechanical vibrations outside the device has been demonstrated. The
triboelectric-nanogenerator (TENG) and electromagnetic generator (EMG) were combined
into a single body to form the floating oscillator-embedded triboelectric-electromagnetic (FO-
TEEM) generator. The floating oscillator's linear oscillation, which was triggered by outside
vibrations, turned on both generators (Seol.., 2016).
All Diploma students must complete Project 2 as their final year project (FYP). To
complete this final assignment, each group must consist of three people. Our group is
working on a portable fan project. The community in Malaysia today needs assistance, and
that is the main goal of our effort. The current state of Malaysian society includes a number
of issues, with one area of concern for our group being the nation's warming trend. In reality,
the Malaysian community needs something that is comfortable and convenient and portable
as well. It is for this reason that all of the issues raised by the Malaysian community have
been resolved using portable fans produced by our group. It is equipped with a number of
other features present in our group's portable fan, including a power bank, sound sensor, and
LED lighting, in addition to having a fan speed that can keep users cool. Additionally, our
portable fan is small enough to be stored easily and transported anywhere. Aside from that,
the target audience for the Portable Fan project's implementation is mostly campers (Keon et
al., 2022).
The community will therefore find it easier to go camping with this Portable Fan
because they only need to bring one item that serves multiple purposes, which is the Portable
Fan made by our company. The main takeaway from this portable fan is that it can benefit
people greatly because it has a variety of features and functionalities. As a result, this
portable fan is safe to use by people of all ages, including both adults and children.

A novel design for a compact desk fan based on experimental analysis and
numerical simulation technology is suggested in order to accomplish the function of short-
term quick cooling and long-term relaxing refrigeration. To identify the design aim, the
market study and information retrieval of the design research object are first carried out;In the
second step, the performance characteristics of the current products are analyzed using
experimental testing and numerical analysis technology, and the preliminary design direction
is clarified. In the third step, the feasibility hypothesis regarding the previous design direction
is advanced and verified according to mechanism analysis. Finally, the product appearance
design is driven by the key functional characteristics of the design solution, and the final
design concept is presented (Lai et al.., 2019).
Electric fans may be able to effectively cool people in hot weather while emitting
less greenhouse gases and costing less than air conditioning. We sought to identify
temperature and humidity-dependent thresholds at which electric fans would be harmful to
certain age groups (Morris.., 2021).
An new design solution for a compact desk fan based on experimental analysis and
numerical simulation technologies is provided in order to accomplish the function of short-
term quick cooling and long-term relaxing refrigeration of the device. To determine the
design goal, the market investigation and information retrieval of the design research object
are first performed. Next, the performance characteristic of the existing products is analyzed
with experimental testing and numerical analysis technology, and the preliminary design
direction is clarified. Finally, the feasibility hypothesis is advanced and verified in
accordance with mechanism analysis regarding the final design concept is the result of output
research, and the product appearance design is driven by the key functional aspects of the

Naturally, people have been manually fanning themselves for ages—or, like the
ancient Egyptians, forcing slaves to fan them with enormous lotus leaves. The method of
fanning air across wet mats or water-filled jars for evaporative cooling was also discovered
by the Egyptians. The cooling power of snow brought down from the Alps was added by
Roman emperors. The Greeks and Romans chose peacock feathers for fanning. In the seventh
century, the Japanese developed folding fans that may have been influenced by the way bats
fold their wings. However, the Ming Dynasty in China (1368 tpo 1644), when finely painted
fans were all the rage, was the heyday of the handheld fan. In the 1400s, traders from
Portugal transported fans from Asia to Europe. In the year 180 AD, A single man could cool
an entire hall using the seven 10-foot-diameter wheels used in the rotary fan invented by the
renowned Han period inventor Ting Huan. Later, rotary fans were employed for ventilation in
mine shafts in addition to cooling, winnowing grain, and other purposes are also forerunners
in mechanizing the fan.
This work presents the cooling-fan efficiency (CFE) index, which measures the
cooling effect (as determined by a thermal manikin) produced by a device in relation to its
power consumption. The index was established for a desk fan, tower fan, standing fan, and
ceiling fan in a real office at three distinct air temperature levels. The findings show that the
index is sensitive enough to detect variations in how well the cooling devices function. It is
necessary to create an index for measuring fan efficiency, such the CFE index suggested in
this work, as well as a consistent procedure for testing the fan cooling impact.
In April 2012, the most recent electronic searches were conducted. In order to find
further studies, we also looked through the reference sections of pertinent papers, visited the
websites of pertinent national and international organizations, and contacted with academics
and decision-makers with expertise in heat-management methods.
At the moment, the investigation of the fan blade's noise reduction mechanism is the
main focus of research on micro fans. For instance, Cheng et al. proved the inclined/swept
static blade's ability to reduce noise by analyzing the noise characteristics of fan tip clearance
and inclined/swept blades using the mixed flow field/sound field (CFD/AA) model
calculation approach. The performance of an unequal distance blade fan's noise reduction was
studied and examined by Zhai et al. and Xiao Hu. The findings demonstrate that an unequal
spacing blade fan can reduce discrete noise in the audible range for humans. The impacts of
the tail edge tooth profile, blade perforation, and other tip clearance features on the
performance and noise of the small axial flow fan were examined in the study by Qian from
the perspective of fan blade modeling. The outcomes demonstrate that the tooth tail edge fan
has a better effect on noise reduction.
Additionally, a small fan's noise-reduction method is a research topic. includes a
support structure, muffler, and other components. The research of fan comfort is crucial
because it is one of the key indicators of fan performance. In the study of home electric fans,
BALMUDA proposes the double-layer structure blade comfort fan as a solution. This product
is made by The Green Fan and pulls the outer fast wind convergence through the inner slow
wind before impinging on each other to get rid of the vortex and achieve the desired disorder
effect and comfortable natural wind simulation. However, there is a dearth of design-related
studies on the comfort of small fans. In this study, a micro desk fan product design solution
with short-term quick cooling and long-term relaxing refrigeration function is proposed. It is
based on the existing mini fan design, combined with experimental analysis and numerical
simulation technology.
On the one hand, there is a healthy market for circular fans based on the average fan
modeling design, and the circular modeling design is in line with the periodicity of fan blade
rotation and its symmetrical rotation path, which can combine the average length of the rigid
spoke and the intensity of the telescopic change, which is advantageous for switching
between clockwise and counterclockwise rotation angles of the fan guard. On the other hand,
the circular modeling design curve is supple and simple to create, allowing for the
transmission of a natural and fundamental design notion (Huang et al.., 2019).
The combined control knob and circular fan guard design concept served as the
foundation for the proposed knob design approach, which adopted the circular rotation
control knob in the center of the fan guard as the preferred interaction mode. The target
market's demographics are influenced by the color and composition of the product. In this
design, the location of midrange and high-end clients is utilized as an illustration (Chen et
al.., 2019)
However, there are many places on Earth where using a fan as a permanent
substitute for air conditioning could be safely advised despite air temperatures exceeding the
currently advised threshold of 35°C. Our findings generally show how the effectiveness of
fan use varies depending on the local weather conditions in each geographic area and the
individual's capacity for thermoregulation. With the exception of the warmest 1-2 hours of
the day on the warmest 1-3 days recorded throughout the 13-year period under consideration,
many other places had climatic circumstances where fan use would not have been beneficial
and could instead be advised for the bulk of the time (Chaseling.., 2021).
Because of friction and duct bending loss, a portable fan's real flow rate is reduced
when it is utilized with a flexible duct. The author conducted laboratory tests with the goal of
demonstrating how a fan's performance degrades and presented the quantitative relationship
between friction and duct bending loss of a flexible duct to the flow rate of a portable fan.
Methods: For the studies, four commercial portable fans with varying specifications were
purchased. Actual flow rate measurements were used to examine how each portable fan's
performance declined as a result of friction loss and other factors caused by a linked flexible
duct. Results: When a flexible duct was connected, the flow rate clearly decreased from the
rated flow rate. The flow rates were reduced to 81.2 - 52.9% and less than 50%, respectively,
by connecting a straight polyester flexible duct and a straight aluminum flexible duct. As the
bend angle of the flexible duct was increased, the flow rate fell. In conclusion, it is advised
that every job site meticulously do a flow rate check of a portable fan (Ojima.., 2017).
The design of a portable charger that uses Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) on a
printed circuit board (PCB) as a power source is covered in this paper. Three DMFC
modules, a pump, a fuel tank, and a DC-DC voltage converter make up the charger. Through
USB ports connected in parallel, the power output was managed under 5 volts. A cell phone
charger, a cycling pump for the DMFC, an LED light, and an MP3 player with speakers were
all powered by the DMFC charger at the same time. A data acquisition (DAQ) system
coupled to a real-time monitor measured the current output from the DMFC system operating
at various fuel flow rates and power levels in order to analyze the dependability and
efficiency of the DMFC power source. In the current portable charger system with PCB-
based DMFCs, the results offer crucial information for the control algorithm to obtain fuel
flow rate management in the DMFC system with higher reliability and efficiency (Kuan..,
2007).
CHAPTER 3
This chapter includes sources of data, the instruments and data gathering procedures
employed in the study. It also discusses the triangulation aspect of data gathering procedure
and the methods of research used in the study.
This study used the descriptive method of research to determine the study of making a
portable fan with LED lighting and a universal outlet as an alternative solution to the never-
ending hotness and power outages. According to the results of the experiments, the TENG
component has reliable charging characteristics, whereas the EMG component has quick
charging characteristics. The hybrid device provides both advantages. An LED lamp, a
portable fan, a wireless illuminance sensor system, and smartphone charging were all
successfully powered by the electrical energy collected and stored by the FO-TEEM
generator.
