Social Darwinism and “the white man’s burden” promoted racism because it allowed
Europeans to believe that they were superior and had a moral obligation to dominate
other people. It made them believe they needed to show them how to become more
civilized and how to become more like Europeans.

The British East India Company exerted so much power because they were a joint
stock company that operated like a multinational corporation with rights over British
trade with India.

The British East India Company was creating a power vacuum and disunity in India.
4. How did the power dynamic change in India after the Sepoy Mutiny?
The power dynamic changed in India after the Sepoy Mutiny because the company
didn’t really respect the customs/religions of the sepoys. The sepoys learned that their
bullet cartridge were greased with pork and beef fat, which violated both Muslim and
Hindu dietary laws and this caused the sepoys to rebel. This meant that the sepoys
weren't doing their jobs which was mainly being soldiers, which change the power
dynamic.

The British brought westernization to India by having the upper castes taught English,
they were expected to adopt English attitudes, christianity spread, railroads and canals
were built, and urbanization increased.
6. What brought about the Opium War?
The British traders introduced opium to the Chinese and quickly the Chinese had
grown addicted to this drug which caused destruction. The emperor forbade the further
sale or use of opium and this is what started the Opium War.
7. How did the Europeans gain control after the 2nd of the Opium Wars?
The Europeans gained control after the second Opium War after fighting for four
years. It resulted in the opening of all of China to European trade.
8. What resulted from Chinese discontent with their own government’s actions?
Since the world realized the China was easy target, the Chinese realized themselves
that their government was weak and begin to rebel.
9. What resulted from the Sino-Japanese War?
The Chinese were defeated in the sino-japanese war when Japan wanted in on the
action. The Treaty of Shimonoseki forced China to hand over control of Taiwan and
grant the Japanese trading rights similar to those it had granted to the Europeans. The
Japanese also defeated the Koreans and took control of the entire peninsula.
10. What was the general cause of the Boxer rebellion?
The general cause of the Boxer Rebellion was Chinese nationalism. The boxers were
anti manchu, anti European, and anti-christian and they wanted to drive the Europeans
and Japanese out of China.
11. What were some ways the “Meiji Restoration” put Japan on a path to global power?
Some ways the “Meiji Restoration” put Japan on a path to global power was by giving
Japan an error of westernization. This led to Japan building railroads and steamships,
abolishing the Samurai warrior class and establishing a military service among all
males, increased cultural activity which helped develop national identity, maintain
trade, and finally Japan was now an impartial power itself.

The Warfare broke out between the British and the Boers because the Boers had
discovered diamonds and gold and the British followed, fighting for the rights to the
resources. The British reigned supreme and all of South Africa was annexed as part of
the British Empire. The Africans were not allowed to claim the gold and diamonds and
they were made to work in the mines as their natural resources were sent abroad.
13. By the late 19th century, what was Britain’s position in regard to Egypt?
By the late 19th century, Britain position in regards to Egypt was that Egypt exported
their cotton production for profit. Ali built Suez Canal and this canal became important
to Britain because it had a huge colony and India and as Egypt started selling stock in
its canal to raise money, the british government bought up the stock and controlled the
canal. Britain had maneuvered its way into Egypt.
14. What resulted from the Berlin Conference of 1884-85?
What resulted from the Berlin Conference of 1884 was that the delegates set up rules
for how future colonization rights and boundaries would be determined on that
continent. The Europeans left the conference in haste and each country wanted to be
the first to establish possession in various parts of Africa.
15. What were some types of industrial progress that colonization brought to Africa?
Some types of industrial progress that colonization brought to Africa was the building
of railroads, dams, and roads.
16. What were some ways the United States would get involved in political affairs in the
Americas?
Some ways the United States would get involved in political affairs in the Americas was by
declaring the Monroe Doctrine and the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. This
allowed the United States to intervene in financial disputes between European powers and
countries in the Americas to maintain peace.
17. What were a few reasons why urbanization facilitated global changes?
A few reasons why urbanization facilitated global changes was due to the new economic,
political, and social changes that were occurring. There were advances in power and
transportation and this facilitated the movement of resources and manufactured goods.
There were was a new need for a large number of laborers, jobs.
