FINDING SUM BY MULTIPLYING

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

• Find the sum of the numbers mentally

• Easily find the sum of the numbers in sequence by multiplying
• Apply the steps in finding the sum by multiplying

Discussion:

This technique in finding the sum of a numbers by multiplying is only

applicable to a numbers which is in sequence order. For example the sum from 1-
100, the sum of odd numbers which is greater than 2 but less than
50(3,5,7,9,…,49), the sum of even numbers from 2-50, and more. For example the
1 + 100 = 101
2 + 99 = 101 1,2,3,4,…,100
3 + 98 = 101
. . .
1,…50,51…,100
. . . (50+51)/2= 50.5
. . .
50 +51 = 101
(50.5)*(100)=5050

sum from 1-100 is equal to 5050 and it follows:

So, we have here 50 pairs and each pair is equal to 101 if we multiply 50
by 101 the result will be equal to 5050.

Another also, find the median of the number from 1-100 so the middle
most is 50 and 51 so we will add the two and divide it by 2 to get the middle
point between them or add the first number 1 and the last number 100 then
divide it by 2 so the result will be 50.5 . Then to get the sum multiply the middle
point by the total number of numbers then it goes this way (50.5)*(100)= 5050. To
get the total numbers of terms subtract the last term to the term before the first
term and divide it by the difference of each term.

Find the sum of the numbers less than 105 that is divisible by five.
(5,10,15,…,100)

Step 1: Add first term and last term then divide by two to get the median.

5+100=105 105 /2 = 52.5

Step 2: Subtract the last term to the term before the first term and divide it by the
difference of each term.
(0,5,10,…,100) so 100 – 0 = 100

The difference of each term is 5 so 100/5 = 20

Step 3: Multiply the middle number and the number of terms.

(52.5)(20)=1050

If the total number of numbers is odd then it is easily to get the sum, just
multiply the total number by the middle most, for example: 3+4+5+6+7+8+9, so
we have seven numbers and 7 times 6 since 6 is the middle most we get 42, so the
sum of the numbers is 42.
Examples:
Find the sum of the ff. numbers:

1. 41+43+45+47+49 (45)*(5)=225
2. 55+60+65+70+75 (65)*(5)=325
3. 97+98+99+100+101+102+103 (100)*(7)=700
4. Sum of numbers from 1-200. (100.5)*(200)=20100
Evaluation:
Find the sum of the ff. numbers:

1. Greater than 5 but less than 100

2. 21+22+23+24+25+26+27+28
3. 47+57+67+77+87
4. 1050+1051+1052+1053+1054
