BALANCED AVERAGE APPROACH
II. Objectives
At the end of discussion, all students are expected to:
1. Perform balanced average approach within a short-period of time.

III. Discussion
Balanced Average Approach
Using this approach, we will easily know what minimum grade should we attain at the
remaining grading period to achieve our target average for the particular school term.
Steps of Balanced Average Approach
1. Subtract your previous grades from your target average and sum up all the difference.
2. Add the difference to your target average. The result will be the minimum grade you need to
attain for the remaining grading period to achieve your target average.

Example:
In your Math class, your target minimum average is 92. The following were your grades
from the previous grading periods:
First grading – 85
Second grading – 96
Third grading – 88
Fourth grading – ?
Step 1:
92-85= 7 7–4+4=7
92-96= -4
92-88= 4
Step 2:
92 + 7 = 99
Therefore, you need to have a grade of 99 to achieve your target average of 92. To
check, just simply get the average of all the grading period to see if it is equal to your target
average.
IV. Evaluation
1. In your Math class, your target minimum average is 90. The following were your
grades from the previous grading periods:
First grading – 87
Second grading – 89
Third grading – 94
Fourth grading – 90
Fifth grading - ?
2. In your Physics class, your target minimum average is 85. The following were your
grades from the previous grading periods:
First grading – 82
Second grading – 81
Third grading – 83
Fourth grading – 87
Fifth grading - ?
3. In your Biology class, your target minimum average is 87. The following were your
grades from the previous grading periods:
First grading – 80
Second grading – 88
Third grading – 88
Fourth grading – 94
Fifth grading - ?
