Summer Course – Vedic Math

DOUBLING

Session :3
By the end of this session you will be able to
Understand:-
Doubling:

(1) Multiplying by 2, 4, 8

(2) Multiplying by 5, 25,50

Learning Objectives

Check
List
If you need to share these mangoes equally with your sister, then how
many she should get ?

Brain Teaser
Solve the following by using the conventional method :

(1) 1000 +1000 =

Pre-assessment
(2) 32+32 =

(3) 68× 50 =
Doubling(“ ” x 2)
Adding two of the same number is called doubling.
Doubling is an excellent strategy to restructure a problem with
multiple digits and make it easier to solve.
Example:- To double 68 we just think of doubling 60 and 8 and
then adding.
Double 60 is 120,
Double 8 is 16.
And adding 120 and 16 gives 136.
Example:- To double 680 we double 68 and put ‘0’ on the end:
1360.
Example:- Double 273
we double 270 and 3.
So you get 540 + 6 = 546.

Double the following numbers:-

MULTIPLYING BY 4, 8
Multiply by 4 by doubling a number twice.
Multiply by 8, double the number three times.
Try solving the followings :-
MULTIPLYING BY 5, 50, 25
We can find the result while multiplying by 5.
In this case we can multiply by 10 and halve the result.

Example:-
Multiply by 5:-

Example:-

Multiply:- (a) 46 × 25 (b) 72 × 25 (c) 85× 25

Example:-

Multiply:-

(a) 46 × 50 (b) 86 × 50 (c) 94 × 50

Assessment/Homework

Use the strategy of doubling to rewrite these multiplications as simpler problems,

then answer the problem:-

1) 34×50 9) 120×25
2) 12×25 10) 112×50
3) 44×25
4) 18×4
5) 80×50
6) 172×25
7) 46×5
8) 37×4
Recap:
(1) Multiplying by 2, 4, 8

(2) Multiplying by 5, 25,50

Learning Objectives Revisited
By the end of the session you have been able to do :

(1) Multiplying by 2, 4, 8

(2) Multiplying by 5, 25,50
