STANDARD FORM

Standard form is a way of writing down very large or very small numbers
easily.
103 = 1000,
so 4 × 103 = 4000 .
So 4000 can be written as 4 × 10³ .
This idea can be used to write even larger numbers down easily
in standard form. Small numbers can also be written in standard form.

 Multiplication and Division of standard forms:

Multiplication: Multiply the number parts together and the power terms
together. To multiply the power terms add the powers.

Division: Divide the number parts together and the power terms together. To
divide the power terms subtract the powers.

Work out (9 × 108 ) ÷ (3 × 102 )

(9 × 108 ) ÷ (3 × 102 ) = (9 ÷ 3) × (108 ÷ 102 )

= 3 × 108−2

= 3 × 106
