GIVING THE VALUE OF NUMBERS INVOLVING EXPONENTS

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Have a nice day to you my dear learner! Welcome to the first

module in Mathematics VI. More exercises are provided to help
you understand the lesson. Please read the instructions very well
so that you may be able to answer all the questions given.

Let’s Learn This

This module is all about “Giving Meaning and Value of

Exponent and Base, and Giving the Value of Numbers Involving
Exponents”.

Let’s Try This

Fill in the blanks with correct number to complete the statement.

1. In 6³ _______ is the base and ________ is the exponent.

2. 9² is the exponent form of 9 times _________.
5
3. 3 means 3 multiplied by _________ 5 times.
4. 6³ means _______ is multiplied by itself _______ times.
5. In 4² _________ is the exponent and ________ is the base.

square-shaped table in the dining room in preparation for her
birthday. Express how big the area of the cloth is.

Questions:

A.
1. Who has to sew a tablecloth? __________
2. What is the shape of their table? __________
3. Where will she use the tablecloth? __________
4. Where is the table placed? __________
5. Why does Lovely need to sew a tablecloth for their table?
__________

B.
1. What is the mathematical phrase used in the problem?
__________
2. What expression can this be? __________
3. What number sentence that fits to the problem? __________
4. What makes your sentence true? What sign is used to show
that your sentence is true? __________
5. If the sentence is true, what is its other name? ____________
6. Write the equation about the problem. __________
7. Rename the 64 as a product of 8 x 8. __________
8. What do you call 8 in 8 x 8? Or 8² = __________
9. How about the small number ²? __________
10. How big is the tablecloth sewed by Lovely? __________

The table below shows how we use exponents to simplify the
writing of expressions with several factors.
For this product We think We write We say
100 or 10x10 10 is used as 10 to the 2nd
a factor 2 10² power or 10
times squared
1,000 or 10x10x10 10 is used as 10 to the 3rd
a factor 3 10³ power or 10
times cubed
10,000 or 10 is used as 10 to the 4th

100,000 or 10 is used as 5
10 to the 5th
10x10x10x10x10 a factor 5 10 power

• The number 10², 10³, 10 , 10 ,10 , are called powers of 10.
This is called the BASE. The raised numbers 2,3,4,5 and 6 are
called EXPONENTS.
• Numbers other than the 10 can be used as a base.
Examples:
2² = 2x2 = 4
5³ = 5x5x5 = 125
9³ = 9x9x9 = 729

Let’s Do This

Write Yes or No. Number 1 is done for you.

Yes 1. If N is 2, then 3N + 1 = 7
____ 2. If A is 4, then 12 – A = 3 + 2
____ 3. If Z is 5, then 20 – 2Z = 10 – Z
____ 4. If L is 6, then 2L – 4 = 8

-3-
____ 5. If G is 4, then 2G + 2 = 10

Let’s Do More

Give the value of the following exponents.

Number 1 is done for you.
(* 9² *)

Equation Value
1. 9² 9x9 81
2. 5³ _____ _____
3. Eight to the 4th power _____ _____
4. 10 is the base, 4 is the exponent _____ _____
5. 10 cubed _____ _____

Let’s Remember This

The exponent tells how many times the base is

taken as a factor.

The base is the bottom part of anything.

It is the number used as the factor.

-4-
Let’s Test Ourselves

Write the base exponent its meaning, value and equation of the
following.
Number 1 is done for you.

Base Exponent Meaning Value Equation

5x5x5 or
1. 5³ 5 3 5x5x5 125 5³ = 125

3. 2³
4. 10²
5. 8³
6. 3
7. 9²
8. 4²
9. 6³
10.7²

Let’s Consider This

If you got 8-9, proceed to the next module.

If you got 6-7, do the “Let’s Enrich Ourselves”
If you got 5 or below, review the whole module.
