FRACTIONS (Part-1)
When we divide anything into equal parts , each part is called fraction
of the whole.
• Fractions is a part or a part of a whole.

• is read as one – half or one by two.

• is read as one – fourth or one – quarter or one by four.

• When a fraction is formed, the whole is divided into equal size.

For example to take of a pizza, it is divided into 4 equal parts.

One – Half
When an object is divided into equal parts , then each part is called
one – half of the whole .

Each shaded part is ‘one – half ‘ and is read as ‘one by two’ or


‘ one – half ‘ or ‘ one out of two ‘ .

Even the unshaded part represents or one – half as both are equal .

One – third and Two – thirds


When an object is divided into three equal parts , then each part is
called one – third of the whole .

Shaded part represents or ‘ one – third ‘ or ‘ 1 by 3’ or ‘ 1 out of 3 ’

and is read as one by three .


Unshaded part in each case represents two – thirds .

We express it as or two – thirds .

One – fourth and three – fourths


When an object is divided into four equal parts then each part is called
one – fourth or quarter of the whole .

Types of Fractions
Proper Fraction
A fraction in which numerator is smaller than the denominator is
called the proper fraction.
