Decimals

The word decimal means base 10. A decimal number is one which has whole number values
and numbers with a fractional value (less than 1).

The whole number is separated from the fractional number by a decimal point (.)

Decimals Place Value

The first digit after the decimal point is in the tenths place value.

The second digit after the decimal point is in the hundredths place value.

The third digit after the decimal point is in the thousandths place value.

For example:
Examples:

1. 7 hundreds, 8 tens, 3 ones and 9 tenths:

H T O . Tenths

7 8 3 . 9

9
= 783.9 or 783
10

2. 4 hundreds, 6 ones, 8 tenths and 7 hundredths:

H T O . Tenths Hundredths

4 0 6 . 8 7

87
= 406.87 or 406
100

3. 5 tens, 3 ones and 6 hundredths:

H T O . Tenths Hundredths

5 3 . 0 6

6
= 53.06 or 53.06
100

4. 4 tenths and 5 hundreths:

H T O . Tenths Hundredths

0 . 4 5

45
= 0.45 or
100
Decimals in Expanded Notation

Examples:

1. Express 17.62 using expanded notation.

1 1
17.62 = (1 x 10) + (7 x 1) + (6 x ) + (2 x )
10 100

= 10 + 7 + 0.6 + 0.02

2. Express 336.37 using expanded notation.

1 1
336.37 = (3 x 100) + (3 x 10) + (6 x 1) + (3 x ) + (7 x )
10 100

= 300 + 30 + 6 + 0.3 + 0.07

Converting Decimals to Fractions

Note:

1. One digit after the point equals tenths.
