 Where
Mt. Semeru is located in Indonesia East Java, Lumajang. Some village were
affected.
 When
The Semeru eruption happened on Saturday 4 th December 2021 at 3 pm in the
afternoon.
 Who
Nearly 2000 people including children and senior were evacuated from the area
around the volcano. Evacuess took to the shelter in public facilities, including
village hall and school. The eruption damaged a lot of houses and several public
buildings. Until now some people were reported missing.
 What
Authorities raised the volcano’s warning status to the highest level.
 Why and How
It happened caused by the collapse of the lava dome at the summit.

Background
Semeru is from Sansekerta, Meru yang Agung. Agung means huge. Semeru is one of the
more than 100 active volcanoes in Indonesia and it is the highest mountain in Java Island.
Indonesia, an archipelago of 270 million people, sits on the Ring of Fire around the pacific
ocean that sets frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
The oldest record of an eruption was from 8 November 1818, since 2012 the Mt. Semeru
was in level 2.
