INTRODUCTION

School education is very important in an individual's life. This is the period where
academic excellence plays a vital role and impact in a student. There are many
academic factors that could affect the lives of those studying. One of these factors that
can greatly affect to student is academic pressure. It does not only affect them mentally
but also emotionally and physically. Academic pressure is a common phenomenon
experience by students of all ages and levels of education. It refers to the stress and
anxiety that students may feel as a result of the demands and expectation placed on
them by their educational institutions, parents or themselves.

According to Airic (2012), academic pressure mainly comes from peer, parental
expectations, and from fear of failure and disgrace. These days, everything that we do
in school is looking towards getting into a good college by aiming for a good grades,
loading on multiple class and most importantly, studying hours on end in order to do
well on exams. All these academic pressures can lead to many negative effects such as
cheating on tests and getting ill. With the presence of academic pressured in our daily
lives, we tend to derelict ourselves for the sake of complying the requirements needed.
Academic pressure can have a number of negative impacts on students, which can
affect their mental and physical health, academic performance, and overall well-being.

In a study conducted by the American psychological Association (APA), students

who reported high levels of stress and pressure were more likely to experience
difficulties in their academic performance (APA, 2018). Academic pressure can also
lead to sleep disturbances, fatigue, and decrease overall well-being. One of the most
significant impact of academic pressure is on mental health. Studies have shown that
high levels of academic pressure can lead to increased rates anxiety and depression
among students. This can be caused by the pressure to maintain, good grades, the
pressure to succeed in extracurricular activities, and the expectation to attend
prestigious schools. These pressures can lead to feeling of inadequacy hopelessness,
and a lack of self-esteem, which can have a negative impact on students mental health.
Furthermore, high levels of academic pressure can lead to procrastination, and
decreased motivation, making it more difficult for students to complete their coursework
and meet deadlines.

A study by the American Association of Educational Research (AAER) found that

students who reported high levels of academic pressure were less likely to engage in
creative thinking and problem-solving (AAER, 2016). This can have a long-term impact
on students' ability to the think critically and creatively, which can be detrimental to their
future success in the work force. In conclusion, academic pressure can have a
significant impact on students' mental and physical health, academic performance, and
creativity. It is important for and educators to be aware of the students, parents, and
educators to be aware of the negative effects of academic pressure and to work
together to find ways to reduce it. This can include providing support and resources for
students, such as counseling and stress management programs, as well as creating a
more balanced and less competitive learning environment.

According to a study by the Philippine Mental Health Association, as many as

80% of Filipino students experience academic stress (PMHA, 2017). This pressure
often starts at a young age and continues throughout a student's educational journey,
and can have a significant impact on their mental and physical well-being. One of the
main reasons for the high levels of academic pressure in the Philippines is the country's
strong focus on education as a means of upward mobility. With a limited number of
opportunities for high-paying jobs, many Filipinos believe that achieving academic
success is essential for securing a better future. As a result, students are often pushed
to excel academically from a young age, and are expected to perform well in school in
order to have a chance at a successful career. This problem is also evident in Laureta
National High school. The researcher observe that most of the Grade 11 Students in
Laureta National High School also suffered from academic pressure because of
excessive school works such as; reportings, assignments, quizzes, and etc. Grade 11
students are also given less time to make their school works which pressures them into
passing it on time
The purpose of this study is to know what are the causes and impact of
academic pressure to the Grade 11 students of Laureta National High school and how
are they going to manage it. The study's results can inform the development of policies,
programs, and practices that reduce academic pressure and improve student outcomes,
such as mental and physical well-being, academic performance, and school retention.
