Form 4 Physics Test

1. Explain what you understand by vectors and scalars.

Vectors and scalars are both quantities but they are not the same because vectors
have magnitude and direction but scalars only have magnitude.

2. Consider the quantities that follow and classify them as either vector or scalar
Mass, weight, force, time, temperature, speed, velocity.
The vectors are weight, force and velocity. The scalars are speed, temperature,
mass, time.

3. What is the difference between mass and weight?

The difference between mass and weight is that weight is the gravitational pull of
the earth on an object while mass is the measurement of the amount of matter in an
object.

4. An astronaut on the surface of the moon has a weight of 200N. If the

acceleration due to gravity on the moon is 5ms -2 what will be his mass?
The mass of the astronaut would be 40kg.

5. State the 7 fundamental units in the SI system of units.

The seven fundamental units of the SI system of units are second, meter, kilogram,
ampere, kelvin, mole, candela.

6. Write a formula for density.

The formula for density is: density=mass/volume (denisity= g/c m3)

7. What will be the volume of the irregularly shaped rock in the measuring cylinder
below?
The volume of the irregularly shaped rock in the measuring cylinder is 25c m3.
8. If the mass of the rock is 40g what will be the density of the rock. Please ensure
that your units are given with your answer.
The density of the rock is 1.6 g/c m3.

9. List 2 precautions you will take when taking measurements with a measuring
cylinder.
Two precautions when taking measurements from a measuring cylinder are to
place the measuring cylinder on a flat surface and to position the eye at the same
level as the bottom of the meniscus.

2. a. Consider the data above. Calculate the values for the weight in the table.
( Assume g=10ms-2)

b. Plot a graph of weight (y-axis) vs extension (x-axis).

c. Determine the gradient of this graph.

3. a. State the principle of moments.

For a body in equilibrium, the total clockwise moments is equal to the total
anti-clockwise moments.

b. Calculate the sum of the clockwise moments in the arrangement

above.
The sum of the clockwise moments in the arrangement above is 30
Nm.

c.Determine the value of F2

F2=7.5N

4. a. State the unit of energy.

The unit of energy is Joules(J).

b. Explain what you understand by potential energy.

Potential energy is the energy held by an object because of its position.

c. A body of mass Kg is held 2 meters above the ground. Calculate the

gravitational potential energy of the body.
The gravitational potential energy of the body is 98 J.
