SUBTASK 3241XX-60000010001
A. Visual Examination of the Condition of the Wheel
Ref. Fig. Check
(1) Do a check of the wheel for sign of structural failure.
(a) Visually examine for cracks on the wheel flanges and the web areas and around
the lightening holes, the valve stem, pressure release plug and the fusible plug
holes.

(b) Replace any wheel, which exhibits sign of cracks or other structural damage.

(2) Visually examine for the condition of the paint and the surface finish.
(a) If the paint has scratches, damages, or scuffed off in spots and if you find the
corrosion on the aluminum surface, remove the wheel for repair at the next
check.
(b) Corrosion can occur quickly under some environmental conditions, so it is very
important that the paint and the surface finish be kept in good repair.

(3) Do a check of the wheel halves for surface damage.

(a) Nicks, scratches and gouges on the wheel halves are possible sources of cracks.
(b) Replace the wheels that have dangerous surface damage.
(c) The wheels that have minor damage should be removed for repair at the next
check.

(4) Visually examine for the loose or missing wheel bolts and nuts.
(a) If any of the bolts and the nuts are loose or missing, remove the wheels in
order to find the cause of the problem.

(5) Do a check for grease leakage at the inboard bearing seal.

(a) If the leakage is present, remove the wheel and do a check of the bearing seal
for damage and wear.

(6) Check of serviceable or aircraft wheel turned with a flat or disintegrated tire and
damage to overloaded mating wheel, where applicable, as follows:
(a) Wheel turned with a flat tire:
1 Carefully do a check for deformation in the flange area for tire brinelling
and/or chafing damage on the flange external diameter.
2 Replace any wheel with damage or deformation in more than the limits
and as follows:
- Do a check of the wheel for an out-of-round condition by measuring
the diameter of the flange at three places, equally spaced, around
the external diameter.
- The difference between the largest and smallest diameter values
must not be more than 0.03 in. (0.76 mm).

(b) Wheel turned with a disintegrated tire:

1 Any wheel where the flanges have made direct contact with the runway
due to turns and sliding should be removed from service.
2 The high forces imposed on the wheel flange and bead seat area will
invariably make the wheel nonserviceable, if it has only minimum damage.

(c) Mating wheel:

1 In the event of a wheel turned with a flat or disintegrated tire on any
aircraft fitted with dual wheels, the mating wheel must also be considered.
2 The mating wheel should be removed from service if the distance turned
was sufficient to cause any damage to the overloaded tire.
3 Wheel turned, in the overloaded condition will impose additional forces on
the bolts and nuts that attach the wheel halves together and they can
require early replacement.
4 In all conditions of overloaded operation, the bolts and the nuts must be
replaced or checked for fatigue damage at each tire change.
5 The overpressurization relief device, where fitted, should be replaced in all
conditions.
6 Do the same procedure for the mating wheel which comes under the
conditions given in Ref. A.(6) (a) and Ref. A.(6) (b).
